Noticing her silence, Patricia paused slightly, her eyes flickering. Then she turned to her assistant and said, “Enough chatting. Let’s get down to
business.”
As everyone else started to get ready for the interview, Paulette said to Patricia deadpan, “Save it, Patricia. Your tricks don’t work on me.”
“That’s fine.”
Though Patricia was still smiling, her eyes were devoid of any warmth. “It’s just… We gotta put on a show for Nelson’s sake. I know you and I don’t get along, but at least try when others are around, OK?”
Paulette frowned and didn’t say anything.
She still cared about Nelson.
It had nothing to do with affection. She was just grateful that he had raised her for years.
Taking Paulette’s silence as a yes, Patricia curved her lips and said, “It’s a simple interview today and will end soon as long as you cooperate well. We’ll talk after it’s over.”
It was just some general questions.
Patricia asked Paulette about things like her design inspiration, her motivation for studying jewelry design, and so on.
Paulette answered every question with calmness and composure.
It greatly surprised Patricia, who thought, “There’s only one reason a girl

her age could have such an impressive aura–Nelson’s financial support.
“Otherwise, she would have still been an orphan. Who knows? She might have died in a ditch already!”
Her gaze darkened as she suddenly asked Paulette a question that wasn’t in the script.
“Ms. Davenport, it’s said that a gentleman took you in after you went through some drastic family change when you were a child. Given the fact that you’ve been living a lavish life and spending a fortune on learning jewelry design, have you ever felt guilty toward him?”
Everyone else on the spot was dumbfounded, not expecting her to ask
this.
But given her status, no one dared to say a word.
Looking at her, Paulette knew she did this on purpose.
There was a moment of silence.
Then Paulette said slowly, “No.
“Thanks to him, I get to pursue what I want. I’ll always be grateful to him and will do my best to repay him.
“He supports me because he has ample resources to do so. Personally, I think I should make good use of these resources to make myself better to contribute to society instead of wasting my time thinking whether I deserve these resources.”
With that, she stared at Patricia’s eyes intently. “Any more questions, Ms. Carver?”
Patricia’s face stiffened. She forced a smile and said, “Ms. Davenport, I’m sure a bright future awaits you. May all your dreams come true.”

The interview was over, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief..
The unexpected question was nothing but sharp. Any other interviewee might have gotten into a quarrel with Patricia.
As Paulette packed up her things and was about to leave, Patricia’s voice. rang out from behind her.
“Come here, Paula. I want you to have something.”
Paulette stopped in her tracks and turned around after hesitating for a while.
While rummaging through her bag, Patricia said, “I bought a bracelet for you when I went shopping with Nelson one day. It suits you well. I know you don’t like me, but I want you to have it–consider it a peace offering. Could you accept it?”
She took out a jewelry box and opened it.
“Oops, not this one.”
She quickly closed it and pulled out another from her bag.
Though she was fast, Paulette still saw the jade pendant. Her breath hitched for a second before she said coldly, “Give it to me.”
Patricia seemed confused. “But, Paula, this is what I want you to…”
“I said, give it to me!”
Paulette was on the verge of losing it, and she directly stepped forward to snatch Patricia’s bag.
“What are you doing, Paula? Let go…” Patricia gripped her bag tightly and accidentally bumped into the shelf behind her.
