Chapter 20
A loud crash rang out.
The overloaded shelf crashed down.
Gawking at Patricia, Paulette froze, her mind going blank.
She thought, “What happened? How come Patricia just…”
In the next second, she understood.
Nelson strode in, pushed the shelf away, held Patricia in his arms, and looked at her icily. “This is the second time, Paulette. You totally let me down.”
Nelson hastily brought Patricia to the hospital. Paulette stood by the door. After a while, she still felt paralyzed.
The assistant came over and asked warily, “Ms. Davenport…do you need. to go to the hospital?”
“I…” Paulette wetted her dry lips and said hoarsely, “I’m fine.”
The assistant didn’t know what happened. When she came over, she only saw Nelson run out of the trashed restroom with a disheveled Patricia in
his arms.
Paulette closed her eyes and took a deep breath before saying softly, “I should go if you don’t need me. About Patricia… Please let me know if you
get news.”
Paulette didn’t know how she went home safely.

Dejected, she slumped down on the couch and pinched her numb hand.
How…
How come Patricia had that jade pendant?
Paulette suddenly remembered something. She got up, dashed into Nelson’s study, and started rummaging through the place.
No… Nothing.
She looked into every drawer and even opened the safe.
No sight of her familiar jewelry box.
Paulette sat on the floor, lost in thought. The door of the study was opened with a loud sound.
The mess fueled Nelson’s anger. He roughly forced Paulette to stand up.
“How could you continue to cause a mess? You’ve seen the damage you’ve done!”
Paulette’s arm hurt. But Paulette didn’t move or struggle. She merely looked at Nelson with red–rimmed eyes and asked, her voice harsh, “Where’s the jade pendant Mom left me?”
Nelson paused and subconsciously loosened his grip.
“I’m asking you where Mom’s jade pendant is!”
Paulette shouted, hair plastered to her face due to the sweat. She looked
like a madwoman who was ready to pounce.
Nelson was surprised by the outbreak. He avoided Paulette’s eyes and said lowly, “Why the sudden question?”

“Sudden?”
Staring at his face, Paulette sneered.
“That’s mine! I let you have it because you said I’d lose it… It’s fine, really. But Nelson, why did you give my thing to Patricia? Why?!”
Dayana didn’t leave Patricia with many things. The jade pendant…was the only thing Patricia could carry around and was the most important.
Nelson promised to keep it safe for her.
But it was with Patricia now!
Nelson looked at Paulette’s pale face and suddenly felt sorry.
Yet, he still used a harsh tone. “Tricia borrowed it to take some photos. She isn’t going to claim it as her own.”
“Even so, shouldn’t you ask for my permission first?”
Paulette remembered the defiance in Patricia’s eyes. Patricia knew what this jade pendant meant to her and used it to provoke Paulette, so Paulette would do something recklessly, and Nelson would witness it. It was Patricia’s plan.
Her plan worked.
The only thing Patricia failed to predict was that Paulette didn’t care. about how Nelson thought of her!
“I don’t know whether you gave it to her or just lent it out. I want it back. Mr. Chapman. Dad. I want you to respect me.”
As Paulette finished, a drop of tears fell down. She didn’t blink and just stared at Nelson. Two seconds later, she moved her heavy limbs and left.

Nelson grabbed her hand from behind before she could take another step.
“Paulette!
“It’s just a pendant! Why so angry? I can buy you a lot more if you like it so much.
“Tricia promised to return it once she finished. Anyway, I gave it to her. How could you hit her over such a small problem? Where’s your manners?”
His words wrapped Paulette in a cocoon, leaving her no place to hide.
