Chapter 24
Paulette didn’t answer.
Paulette’s finger slipped, and the surge of water fell, forming a stream under her feet.
Maxine looked at Paulette and smiled, “Elnora asked me to cheer you up. In my opinion, you’re a big girl now, and it’s OK to have a temper. If Nelson has done things that you can’t forgive, you’re free to give him the cold shoulder. It’s fine. I just hope you can talk to me about it. At least, I can analyze the situation for you.
She paused before adding, “Of course, it’s perfectly fine if you don’t want to talk about it.”
Paulette had grown up and could think independently.
Paulette thought she had gotten over it, but Maxine’s words caused her tears to well up.
She didn’t know how to express her feelings. Because as she thought about it…she couldn’t what Nelson had done was seriously wrong.
He just didn’t love her.

What Patricia had done was wrong, but it was her fault only.
Paulette didn’t have the right to demand that Nelson be nice to her forever. What’s more, she had to accept that he’d never returned her love.
“It’s nothing.”
Paulette smiled, “Maxine, it’s just that I’m a grown–up now. I can’t depend

on Dad for everything… After all, he’s going to have a family of his own.”
Maxine understood her meaning.
She sighed inwardly. Although she felt for Paulette, there was nothing she could do.
Maxine wasn’t an old–fashioned person, but she knew love couldn’t be forced.
She took off her gloves, walked up to Paulette, and patted her head softly. “Indeed, you’re a grown–up now. A kind and beautiful woman. You’re going to find a man who loves you. I look forward to it.”
Paulette nodded heavily. “Yes, I will.”
Maxine had a long talk with Paulette.
People grew up when you didn’t notice. Paulette was the same.
She wasn’t the reckless, talkative, and naughty girl anymore. She had gained a calm and quiet aura after so many things.
In some way, it was good news.
After working on the garden for the afternoon, Paulette went to the kitchen to help with dinner.
Elnora felt bad for her as she had stayed under the hot sun for so long. She urged Paulette to get some rest. “You don’t even cook. This isn’t helping. Just go sit down and scroll your phone.”
Paulette felt warm because of Elnora’s caring words and left the kitchen reluctantly.
She turned and saw two people by the door.

Maxine picked some fruits and saw Paulette standing on the spot. “Go sit on the couch. What are you…”
Before she could finish, the two people walked inside. Maxine hesitated a bit before saying gently, “Nelson, you brought a friend home? Have a seat. Paula, go get tea.”
Maxine’s words were welcoming, but it showed she’d seen Patricia as a guest, an outsider.
Patricia frøze before beaming. “Nice to meet you, Maxine.”
Maxine arched a brow and merely smiled. She turned and shouted in the direction of the kitchen. “Elnora! Nelson is home.”
Nelson glanced at them and found a pair of new slippers for Patricia.
When he accidentally made eye contact with Paulette, he suddenly had a hard feeling.
Paulette looked away first and went into the kitchen calmly to make tea.
Elnora had wiped her hands. As she passed Raulette, she whispered, “Whom is with Nelson?”
Paulette said, “His girlfriend.”
“With his taste for women, she must be evil.”
Paulette didn’t reply.
However, she had to admit that Elnora was right.
When she remembered Patricia still had her jade pendant, Paulette frowned slightly and determined to get it back as soon as possible.

She couldn’t count on Nelson.
Should she talk to Patricia directly?
Paulette considered the possibilities in her head and stepped aside once she brought tea out, her ears filled with their meaningless chitchat.
