Chapter 19
It was a perfectly timed suggestion.
Not wanting to disappoint him, Rachel went with Justin to pick up ingredients from the local market. By the time they arrived at Edmund’s house, it was just about lunchtime.
Edmund was all smiles when he saw them walking in with groceries.
“You two are right on time,” he said cheerfully, taking the bags from Justin. “Your brother’s here too, Rachel. Looks like we’re in for a rare family lunch. You should stay a
while.”
Justin instinctively glanced at Rachel.
“Sure,” she replied with a relaxed smile, unfazed. Then she followed Edmund into the kitchen to help with the prep.
When everything was finally ready, they made their way to the backyard, where the grill was already fired up. Smoke curled into the air, and the scent of sizzling meat filled the
space.
But the table itself? Tense.
Justin and Aaron had been sitting in silence, completely ignoring each other. Not a glance. Not a word.
Rachel took the seat between Justin and Edmund, hoping to avoid Aaron altogether- only to look up and realize she was sitting directly across from him.
Aaron stared at her for a moment before suddenly speaking to Edmund with
exaggerated politeness. “So, how’s Rachel been doing here? Work treating her well? She settling in alright?”
He could’ve just asked her directly–but of course, he chose to circle around her instead.
Edmund, oblivious to the subtext, chuckled as he helped himself to some grilled steak.
“She’s doing great. Everyone who’s worked with her says she’s a gem. Honestly, I keep

getting compliments just for being her mentor. They think I struck gold with this one.”
Aaron smiled faintly. “She hasn’t been giving you any trouble, I hope?”
“Trouble? Not at all,” Edmund said, waving it off. “If anything, she and Justin have been keeping me sane. They drop by now and then, and it’s been a real comfort.”
His gaze lingered between the two of them, clearly pleased, clearly hinting.
“Aaron,” he added with a wide grin, “this is Justin–another one of my students. I’m sure Rachel’s mentioned him to you. I won’t ramble, but let me just say: out of all my
students, these two are the brightest. Honestly, I think they’d make a great—”
He didn’t even get to finish.
Aaron cut in with a polite but firm, “Edmund, I understand what you’re trying to say.
But they’re not a good match.”
Edmund’s smile faltered.
Aaron gave Justin a pointed look and continued coolly, “Actually, one of the reasons I’m
here is to speak with Rachel about something important. I’ve already chosen a future
mate for her.”
The air stilled.
Edmund blinked. “Really? Funny, Rachel never mentioned anything about being
engaged…”
“She wouldn’t have,” Aaron said, cool as ever. “But yes, you’ve met him. Sort of.”
Edmund leaned forward, still trying to make sense of it. “And this mystery man-
what’s he like?”
Aaron took a sip of water before replying, “He’s an Alpha. Comes from a
well–established pack. Wealthy, respected, powerful. He could give Rachel anything she wants. And most importantly–he’s madly in love with her.”

Rachel’s eyes narrowed. She had heard enough. Her voice cut through the air like a
blade.
“That’s enough.”
Every head turned.
Even Edmund looked startled–Rachel was usually the calm one at the table.
Realizing she’d raised her voice, Rachel drew in a breath and steadied herself. “Sorry. But I think I’ve made myself pretty clear–I’m not looking for wealth or status. I’m happy with the job I have, and the money I earn is more than enough for the life I want.
You don’t need to manage my future for me.”
Aaron didn’t flinch. His voice dropped low.
“If I don’t look out for you, Rachel… who will?”
“I’m an adult now. I can make my own choices. I don’t need anyone to be ‘responsible‘
me, and I definitely don’t need anyone trying to control me!”
for me,
“You may be grown, but you were raised by my side,” Aaron shot back, voice tight. “Your parents are gone, Rachel. That makes it my responsibility to protect you. I can’t just watch you fall for someone who doesn’t deserve you.”
His glare cut straight through Justin, cold and sharp as ice.
Rachel had had enough. “You think I’m with Justin just to get back at you?” she said, voice trembling with restraint. “I’m not. He’s kind. He respects me. I actually feel good
when I’m around him.”
“I said no
and that’s final!” Aaron slammed his fork against the table with a loud clang. “Rachel, you’re coming home with me.”
