Chapter 99 Pasta

Louis glanced at the food Freya had set down on the tablesome came in disposable paper bowls, others wrapped in plastic bags, and a few served in plastic cups. His brows furrowed. He made a mental note to talk to Freya later about food safety

Meanwhile, Freya hurried off to pick up the pasta she had ordered. By now, she had a pretty good grasp of Louis’s dietary preferences, so she’d made all the right specifications with the vendornothing that would violate his personal rules

When she returned with the pasta and a few more snacks, she saw a young woman speaking to Louis. The closer she got, the more she could hear the irritation in the girl’s voice

I was just asking for directions. Why are you being so rude? Ever heard of common courtesy?”

Freya watched as Louis lifted his head ever so slightly to glance at the girl. She flinched instantly

FFine, forget it. Sorry to bother you.”

The girl even gave a polite little bow before scurrying away in a hurry

Bold move, trying to approach Louis like that. She probably didn’t even realize he hadn’t looked up until just now. No wonder she bolted the second he did

Freya shook her head sympathetically at the poor girl, then happily walked over with her haul. She laid everything out on the table and set a bowl of pasta in front of Louis. Then she helpfully unwrapped a cup of fresh juice and placed it to his left, unwrapped a plastic fork, and laid it neatly over his bowl

Only after taking care of everything did she finally sit down across from him. Her eyes sparkled as she said, full of anticipation

Try it! I did some researchthese are the best snacks on this street, especially the pasta. The flavor’s super authentic. Don’t worry, I asked them to skip the cilantro and peanuts, and the chili they used is just chili oil. It should be great.”

Louis met her bright, expectant gaze. His heart gave a faint tremble. The food safety lecture he had planned died a swift and silent death. All he managed was a single word

Okay.”

He picked up the disposable fork and, pushing past his aversion, scooped up a forkful of pasta and brought it to his mouth. The sour and spicy flavor burst across his tongue, and his mouth instantly watered. After a few chews, the aroma of toasted sesame kicked in. He gave a subtle nod

It does taste good.”

He’d never had what people called authenticpasta, so he couldn’t say whether this counted as the real deal. But it was delicious, and it suited his taste. Especially under the warmth of that smiling gaze, everything feltright..

Only after hearing his praise did Freya finally relax enough to unwrap her own bowl and dig in. She’d been worried Louis wouldn’t be willing to eat street food. After all, he usually looked at her snacks like they were beneath himthis stuff could have been a hard sell

Thankfully, running into those two people at the entrance had helped. Since she’d made sure this place was clean and safe, Louis didn’t seem to mind

After a couple bites, Freya pointed at the juice by his hand. That’s freshsqueezed orange juice. I told them not to add sugar -just a bit of honey. It’s basically like the kind we make at home. Try it.”

The pasta was pretty spicy, so she’d gone out of her way to find this juice stand. That was why she’d taken so long coming back. There were plenty of bubble tea places around, but Louis probably wouldn’t touch those with a tenfoot pole
