Chapter 21
Caroline paused her training due to a leg injury and has been lying in her dorm room for the past few days.
That day, after she woke up, she suddenly thought of a place. Now that her mood was different, she wanted to go back and take a look.
Thinking of this, Caroline changed her clothes and got ready to go out. Just before leaving, she remembered something and called Charleson again.
“Hello?”
After a few rings, the voice of Charleson came through on the phone.
Caroline thought for a moment and said, “Charleson, can you accompany me to a place? I also want to talk to you about something.”
“Okay, Charleson agreed without hesitation. After a while, there was a rustling sound from the other side, indicating that he was getting dressed.”
Caroline heard him say, “Carol, wait for me in the dormitory to avoid that person from harming you again. I’ll come to pick you up.”
It seems he did find something after all, Caroline smiled and whispered softly. “Good.”
After picking her up. Caroline directed him to drive to her and Joshua’s high school.
With Charleson by her side, Caroline made her way to the rooftop. As they climbed the steps to the terrace, Caroline, who had been very nervous, suddenly relaxed.
She covered her heart, which was beating painfully, and slowly approached the place that had once been her happiest but later became her most despairing.
It is June now, and the weather today is not very good. The sky is overcast and a bit stuffy, but the wind is strong. It blows on the body, dispersing the heat.
Caroline walked to the edge of the rooftop railing, the place where she had jumped without hesitation.
The various past events that happened just a few months ago, now coming back here again, she still feels the pain so intense that she can’t breathe.
Forcing back her fear, she leaned against the railing and turned around to see Charleson looking at her with concern. Suddenly, she burst into laughter, as if she wanted to release all the humiliation she had endured for so long.
But the strong wind blew, confusing her eyes, and soon her tears uncontrollably streamed down.
Charleson walked up to her, pulled her to sit down on the edge of the drain in front of the fence, and lent her his shoulder to lean on.
Feeling her pain as if it were his own, he couldn’t help but feel his heart tighten. He comfortingly patted her head and softly said. “If you want to cry, go ahead and cry. I’m here with you ”
Caroline choked out, “Charleson, do you believe it? I have died once before, right here”
Charleson didn’t speak. he just tightened his grip on her shoulder, indicating her to continue speaking
Caroline leaned against him, slowly recounting the entanglements of her past life with Joshua and Kelly.
From her childhood friendship with Joshua, the rooftop confession, to Kelly’s relentless pursuit, and then to her disability.
From Kelly’s post, to Joshua’s transformation, to her desperate leap off the building.
With every word she spoke, it was like cutting another wound in her own heart.
Until the end, she couldn’t hold back anymore: “I’m really in pain. Charleson. I thought I was finally free, but carrying memories, it’s really painful…”
She suppressed her crying, her throat choked painfully, her chest felt like it was being tightly squeezed by a big hand, every slight movement causing pain throughout her body. She was struggling to breathe, her eyes shining with tears, yet filled with sadness and desolation.
Charleson’s hand was tightly held by her, as if she wanted to borrow his body heat, she could tell herself that she was not alone.
At that moment, a person walked out of the stairwell, also with tears streaming down their face, as if on the verge of suffocation, and hoarsely said. “Carol…”
