“Are you saying that Zora only had one kidney to begin with?” Simon quavered.
“It seemed like Ms. Zora donated a kidney to someone else in the past,” Healer Petra corrected. “That was why she only had one kidney. But by the time we discovered this, she had already died from the poison.
“So in order not to let her kidney go to waste, we proceeded with the kidney transplant surgery.”
Looking wronged, Healer Petra continued, “None of you bothered to listen to me earlier. All of you left with the other patient. And since you ordered us not to disturb you, we could only put Ms. Zora in the morgue first.”
It was as if every ounce of strength had been wrung from Simon’s body.
Collapsing to the floor, he muttered, “Zora only had one kidney, yet I still forced her to donate her kidney. It’s all my fault…”
It was then that realization struck him.
He jerked his head up and asked, “Who did she donate her kidney to?”
No one answered him. He quickly summoned his Beta and ordered, “Look into this now! Five years ago, Zora’s father had a kidney transplant. I want to know who really gave him the kidney!”
By the next morning, his Beta had uncovered everything from back then.
As Simon read through the stack of evidence handed to him, his jaw clenched in fury.
He stroked my cheek gently, his voice choking with emotion.
“I knew it. Zora was always so kind and pure… How could she have done something so cruel? It’s all my fault for believing what others said and misunderstanding her.
“But don’t worry, Zora. I’ll make this right. I’ll get justice for you–I won’t let Laila get away with this!”
A tempest of emotions swirled in me as I hovered above, watching him.
