Chapter 5
Kaylee’s POV
The memories faded as torrential rain hammered down around us.[]
Jax slammed on the brakes, bringing his luxury car to a stop outside my building.
Three years had passed. I’d upgraded from a basement to a small studio in a rundown apartment complex.[]
I reached for the door handle, ready to escape, but Jax caught my arm.[]
“Where’s your husband?” he demanded. “Have him come down and get you.“[]
I stayed silent as tension filled the car.]]
“Wasn’t he the rich guy you dumped me for?” Jax sneered. “What kind of loaded husband lets his pregnant wife walk through this downpour? Call him down.“]
I replied evenly: “He’s at work.“]
“Kaylee!” Jax slammed his fist against the steering wheel, patience shattered.]
“You’re still lying to my face? What married couple lives in a dump like this?!“[]
“I asked around your team. Everyone says you’re single.“[]
Why was he investigating me?]
What would Selena think if she heard?
But it hardly mattered. Selena wouldn’t see an assistant as competition–she’d probably think Jax was just making idle gossip out of boredom. So I met his gaze calmly:]
“He’s dead.“]va
Jax’s eyes went wide.[]
“Yes, my husband is dead.“[]
“Then how are you pregnant…“[]
“Some random guy. One–night stand.” I unbuckled my seatbelt. “Bottom line–none of your business.”
I pushed the door open. The rain was coming down in sheets, but I stepped out anyway.[]
I was drenched instantly.]
Jax didn’t follow as I stumbled toward the building entrance.[]
What was the point of any of this?]
From the first day Jax and I got together, I knew he wouldn’t be mine for long.[]

Despite his tattered clothes, it was obvious he came from money.
I just hadn’t realized how much money.[]
The Puths of Washington–an illustrious dynasty with business interests nationwide.[]
Jax had run away at eighteen after fighting with his family about pursuing music.
But he was always going to return eventually.]
And the Puths would never accept someone like me.[]
Selena was the daughter–in–law they envisioned.[]
I kept walking, not noticing a deep puddle until I tripped and crashed hard onto the wet pavement.[]
A sharp pain shot through my stomach, and I started dry heaving.
In an instant, the driver’s door of the luxury car flew open, and Jax strode toward me.[]
He yanked off his jacket, wrapped it around me, and scooped me up.
“Jax, have you lost your mind?” I protested. “We broke up-”
He cut me off, fuming: “Every word you don’t say earns you ten grand.“]
I: “…“]
I shut my mouth instinctively.[]
“You really do love money more than anything, don’t you?” Jax exploded, practically throwing me into the passenger seat before speeding toward the hospital.
