Chapter 6
Kaylee’s POV
I woke up in a hospital room, staring at a stark white ceiling.[]
Jax sat beside me, his eyes like ice.
“My baby… did I lose my baby?” I clutched my stomach, attempting one final performance.
“Kaylee, you’re wasting your talent not being in Hollywood.“[]
Jax tossed the medical chart onto my lap: “Gastritis. How the hell have you still not learned to eat properly after all these years?”
I frowned. “Jax, would it kill you to be civil?“]
“Yeah, probably.”
“Your fans would be disappointed.“]
“They know exactly what they signed up for.“]
He was right. Jax had always been this way.
Temperamental, cold, sharp–tongued–cutting with both his words and his heart. He’d never hesitated to snap at me either.
… Yet somehow he managed to write eighteen sweet love songs for Selena.]
I accidentally let that last thought slip out loud.[]
Jax’s expression darkened further.]
“I really hate hearing that,” he said icily. “I’m canceling all that money I promised you for staying quiet.“]
Now it was my turn to pale.]
Jax let out a mocking laugh and handed me a small bottle:
“Take your medicine.”
So that’s what he’d been shaking–a liquid antibiotic. I’d wondered why it smelled nothing like coffee.]
The medicinal odor hit me, and I recoiled. “Do I have to?“[]
“Ten grand per swallow.”
I smiled skeptically. “Big talk, no proof.“[]
Jax grabbed my phone, opened Venmo and entered his information.[]
With sudden riches on the line, I immediately grabbed the bottle and chugged it down.[]
Gross–it was thick and syrupy, but I finished it in just a few gulps.[]

Chapter 6
I lowered the bottle to find Jax watching me with amusement.[]
When he caught me looking, his scowl instantly returned.[]
After completing the payment, he stood up and pulled a cigarette from a pack, hesitated for a moment, then put it back.]
He still remembered I hated the smell of smoke.[]
“Jax.” I said suddenly, “you’re being so nice to me. Are you trying to get back together?”
Jax scoffed: “Absolutely not.“[]
“I just think that since you’re part of Selena’s team, the sooner you recover, the sooner you can get back to work and support her properly.”
He stared at my face, searching for any reaction.[]
I gazed back calmly, not a flicker of emotion crossing my features.]
The room fell completely silent.
After a moment, Jax hurled his cigarette pack across the room, completely deflated: “God dammit! This isn’t working AT ALL like Selena said it would!“]
“Kaylee, did you ever even give a shit about me?!“[]
