Chapter 16
Benjamin shoved her hand away with disgust, his voice icy.
“Get lost.”
Victoria had lost count of how many times he’d treated her like this, yet her expression remained unchanged.
Still undeterred, she pressed on.

“Ben, I don’t get what’s so special about that woman. Why cling to her?”
His voice turned to ice.

“Victoria, say one more word and I’ll make sure your parents lose their jobs tomorrow.”
She pouted but looked utterly confident.
“Won’t tell? Fine. You’ll be mine eventually, Ben.”
After Victoria left, Benjamin kept staring at me with that intense gaze.
“Benjamin, let’s end things here. Happy birthday.”
I turned to leave but he grabbed my wrist.
Suddenly I tumbled into his embrace, scorching skin pressed against mine. My breath hitched.

I struggled against his hold, but he only tightened his grip.
I looked up into those fathomless eyes.
After a long pause, I whispered: “Benjamin, let’s break up properly. I don’t want us at each other’s throats.”
At least, I truly didn’t want a repeat of last time.
When we’d been at each other’s throats, consumed by his hatred.
I used to think that as long as he was happy and successful, I wouldn’t care even if he hated me–until I lived through it.
That kind of hatred was more than I could bear.
His lips tightened, and he finally released my hand.
After I returned to the dorm.

Olivia came to ask about my date but froze at the sight of my suddenly reddened eyes.
She scrambled onto my bed, her face mask only half applied.
“Elizabeth, what happened? Is my sweetheart hurt? How did that bastard Benjamin bully you? Want me to teach him a lesson tomorrow?”
My eyes dimmed.
“Olivia, we broke up.”
Her breath hitched as she bolted upright in disbelief.

“Why?”
Choking back tears, I wondered how to explain the real reason.
Should I tell her that because I’m afraid I might die one day, I need to cut ties with Benjamin early?
Or should I tell her that Benjamin will end up falling in love with someone else.
But I can’t be that selfish.
I can’t stop him from pursuing a better life.
I can’t let him be stuck in the past because of me.
I understand the reasoning, but I still feel sad.
Especially since it’s Victoria.
Someone so disgusting and repulsive to me.

Benjamin is handsome, great at basketball, studies finance and management, and his academic performance leaves everyone in the dust.
He’s a celebrity on campus.
So the news of our breakup spread on Reddit the next day.
When Olivia found me, she was full of resentment.
“Elizabeth, I’m so mad!”
She carried her laptop with Reddit open on the screen.

“Look how this anonymous poster spreads rumors about you. She got some photo from somewhere, claiming you dumped Benjamin because he was poor.”
I suddenly froze.
It occurred to me: had these same rumors circulated in my previous life when we broke up?
After ending things with him, I’d left immediately–didn’t even contact Olivia.
When I saw Olivia again later, my most repeated phrase was “Let bygones be bygones.”
So I genuinely knew nothing about what happened back then.
I glanced at the photo: the man wore expensive clothes while stepping into a luxury car with me.
And that man was the uncle of the family I tutored part–time for.
