Chapter 22
David Smith continued: “The Smiths are just an average family. Being able to marry into a family like the Hayes is already a blessing. Your sister is the Smiths‘ own flesh and blood, so her marrying into the Hayes is only natural. If the Hayes find out you’re not the Smiths‘ own blood, do you think they’d tolerate you?”
Victoria, who had been silent all along, suddenly burst out.
“Dad! I’ve never harmed Emily Johnson since we were kids!”

“When she was learning to walk and fell, you blamed me for pushing her. I never took anything she wanted. Later, when she nearly drowned and falsely accused me of pushing her, you didn’t even ask and made me kneel in the rain all night, then locked me in the basement for half a month to reflect.”
“I like Benjamin, and this is the only thing I won’t give up!
I was sitting to the side, filling out the case report form.
A middle–aged male officer nearby joked, “How melodramatic.”
He looked at me: “Why is she against you? Could it be because Benjamin likes you?”
I suddenly looked at him and directly said to the female officer beside
- me.
“Officer, your colleague isn’t doing his job. I’m filing a complaint.‘”

The middle–aged male officer immediately dropped his gossipy expression, clasped hands behind his back and snapped in a sharp tone:
“What’s this? What do you think you’re doing? This is a police station! Not some place to air grievances.”
In the end, Victoria only received a verbal warning before being released.
Having no family in this city and Olivia being underage, I had no choice but to call Robert to pick me up.
When he drove to the station and saw me, he doubled over laughing.
“That Victoria is something! She looks so sweet and innocent, never imagined she’d be this vicious.”
At a red light, he suddenly turned serious.
“Elizabeth, level with me. You’re hiding something.”
“Why would Victoria’s sister help call the police on her? That’d just get her sister in trouble. Makes zero sense.”
I froze. What was I supposed to tell him?
Is Benjamin’s arranged marriage partner Victoria’s sister?
If I told him such a soap–opera–like story, he’d probably mock me for a month.
After thinking for a moment, I brushed it off vaguely.
“Maybe the little girl was just bursting with a sense of justice.”

Robert laughed at me the whole way until I was about to get out of the
car.
He stopped me then, handing me a bottle of drug: “For the injury on your leg.”
I froze, only now noticing a faint, barely–there cut on my ankle.
Taking the drug, I teased: “Thanks. Without you, I wouldn’t have noticed until it healed.”
He looked at me earnestly.
“Even the tiniest wound needs care. Watch for infection.”
“Just call me directly if this happens again.”
Watching his figure fade into the distance, my eyes suddenly stung with tears.

In my previous life, when I was undergoing surgery, he–who always championed science–learned from the way they pray in Thailand. He prostrated himself on the ground, kowtowing all the way from the foot of the mountain to the top, until his legs were bruised and bleeding, just to get me a protective amulet.
I casually mentioned craving Ho’s Wonton Soup, and he rushed to buy it late at night.
Even when the shop was closed, he endured half an hour of scolding to wake the owner and have a bowl made for me.
Yet, it was precisely this kind of devotion I turned a blind eye to.
I selfishly soaked up his kindness, terrified that rejecting him would

leave me with nothing.
I feared even this last flicker of warmth would vanish into thin air.
