Chapter 28
I froze instantly.
My disgust toward her peaked at this moment.
Everyone knew Benjamin’s chances of recovery were nearly nonexistent, yet she selfishly disturbed his rest.
Before realizing it, my palm struck her face.
“Get out.”
Victoria clutched her reddened cheek, voice trembling.
“Benjamin, you know I’ve always genuinely liked you.”
“Please, marry me?”
“The Smiths are forcing me to marry some fifty–year–old man. If you refuse, no one can save me…
Her words dissolved into choked sobs.
Emily leaned against the doorway, smiling coldly at the scene.
Her eyes swept over Benjamin lying on the hospital bed. “Sorry about this, Benjamin, brother.”
Then she turned her icy gaze toward Victoria.
“Have you lost your mind? Benjamin’s health is fragile, and you’re here stressing him out?”

“Let me make this clear: You married that old man not because the Hayes–Johnson marriage pact required my participation, but because our family never intended to aim that high.”
“You’re the only one playing games here–and you pursued that man yourself.”
“If you hadn’t begged him to make his son date me, do you think he’d even know you existed? Let alone develop feelings?”
“Now face the consequences alone.”
With that, she dragged Victoria away.
She struggled to stay, casting a pleading look at Benjamin.
Benjamin said coldly, “I’ll help you break off the engagement with that old man, but from now on, we have nothing to do with each other.”
Victoria laughed, laughing wildly.
Then she turned to Emily Johnson and gestured triumphantly: “Emily, what do you think you are? I’m the one Benjamin holds dear to his heart.”
Honestly, I think the Johnsons are sick.
Otherwise, why would both sisters be crazier than each other?
As soon as they left, Benjamin vomited blood.
The pain he’s going through now, I’ve also experienced in my past life.
I know vomiting blood means he’s nearing the end of his life.

At this moment, my heart aches as if pierced by thousands of needles. He never should’ve endured any of this…
He should’ve had a successful surgery. He should’ve lived a long, healthy life.
That night, Benjamin insisted on leaving the hospital.
I knew no medical treatment could help him now.
Rather than clinging to life through machines in a hospital bed,
I wanted him to leave without regrets.
I can’t change the course of events anymore. All I can do is ease his suffering in these final moments.
I pray he finds happiness at life’s end.
We returned to our university,
to the great tree where he’d confessed his feelings back when he was eighteen.
That winter break came with heavy snow, and he asked if I wanted to bury a wish beneath the big tree.
No one could find it, no one could see it.
I said yes.
After we parted, those two wish bottles remained buried here.
I wonder if they’re still there now.

That day I dug for so long, until my hands lost strength and my back ached.
Just as I was about to leave, a sudden downpour washed the two wish bottles out.
I grabbed the wish bottles, my voice filled with uncontainable
excitement: “Benjamin, these wish bottles are still here!”
