Chapter 5
I immediately tried to pull my collar up, but Victoria grabbed my wrist: “Elizabeth, flashing that tattoo for Benjamin? Think he’ll rekindle old flames or keep you employed?”
My throat tightened as I struggled to respond, but she continued coldly: “Or did you carve his name hoping he’d notice?”
“I never thought that way. Stop being so pushy.”
Victoria burst into laughter. “Thought? How dare you? Benjamin told me dating you was just a practice run. Don’t flatter yourself as his white moonlight.”
Her laughter vanished instantly. Venomous eyes locked onto mine, cold as a serpent’s gaze.
“Go ahead. Test me.”
I had no intention to test anything or argue. I just wanted to quietly survive these last four days, get paid and leave.
Pulling my arm free, I set her coffee down and turned to go.
Suddenly Victoria snatched the cup and upended it over my head. Brown liquid cascaded from my hair to my shoes.
Iced coffee shouldn’t be this cold. Yet it chilled me to the bone, freezing me like being locked in an ice cellar.

I endured it until she dumped the entire cup of coffee over me.
Shivering from the cold, I asked, “May I leave now?”
Victoria tossed the empty cup at me, smiling with satisfaction. “Suit yourself. But remember to sort your trash properly. Trash belongs in the trash.”
My chest tightened, breath turning ragged.
I turned away without a word.
When I lifted my gaze, Benjamin was walking through the door.
Our eyes met.
He saw every ounce of my humiliation.
His jaw tensed, the faint warmth in his eyes replaced by unmistakable disgust.
That icy glare pierced my heart like a blade.
A lump formed in my throat, tears welling up.
Just then, Victoria behind me splashed hot water from her cup!
Searing pain shot through my back, bending me double.
The burning agony made my legs buckle.
She rushed into Benjamin‘ arms, feigning innocence: “Benjamin, her face just brings such adversity. I couldn’t help it.”
Benjamin’s icy gaze fell upon me like frost.

After a moment, he stated coldly: “True. Quite the adversity.”
Sudden sorrow flooded my heart.
I’m dying of terminal cancer. How could any dying person look vibrant?
Why did cancer choose me? And why must I cross paths with Benjamin again?
To watch him now, wrapped in tenderness with the very person I despised then and who freely hurts me now?
The lump in my chest tightened, and I suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Dizziness washed over me as I collapsed backward-
When I next opened my eyes, I found myself lying in a hospital bed.
Gritting my teeth against excruciating pain, I forced my eyes open just as an intense argument erupted outside the ward.
I lifted my gaze to see my attending physician, Robert Brown, slam his fist into Benjamin’s right cheek.
“Benjamin! What the hell is wrong with you? When I stepped aside for Elizabeth, what did you promise me? You swore you’d protect her.”
His eyes bloodshot, Robert choked back a sob.
“And you let Victoria bully her like this? Do you even know she has cancer-”

Benjamin wiped the blood from his lip, his gaze snapping up to lock
with mine.
My breath caught as I heard him say.
“She was the one begging to dirty Victoria’s hands. If you don’t mind me having had her, I’ve no objection to you being The Rebound Guy now.”
“But whether she lives or dies is none of my concern.”
