this once, okay? Don’t be mad.”

Chapter 10
I bit down on my tongue until I tasted blood, forced myself to stay calm, and looked at
him.
“Sure”
We’re getting divorced anyway. Might as well go along with it and avoid another round of pointless begging while I’m preparing the paperwork.
Drake smiled gently. “That’s my Eloise. Always so understanding.”
“Oh, and we can’t let word about Penelope get out, so I’ve arranged bodyguards for her. Once the baby’s born, we’ll register it under your name. That way, the Sullivan family’s reputation stays intact. She’ll move abroad,

and the three of us can live peacefully together!”
“Penelope’s not strong. She needs looking after, and you’re the most capable. It’ll be tough on you these next few months. You hate pain, and Penelope’s taking on the childbirth for you. Honestly, we owe her.”
We owe her?
I clenched my fists, laughter bubbling from my rage.
Drake, do you really think I’m that gullible?
“Oh, and Eloise, I already filed your resignation. I’ve decided–once the baby’s born, you’ll stay home and take care of it. No need to go back to the office. I’ll support you and the child.”

That was it. The fury erupted.
I slapped him–hard.
“Let’s get divorced. I don’t want to be tangled up with you anymore.”
Drake held his cheek, stunned. “Eloise! What the hell is wrong with you?!”
Just then, Penelope walked out, her face full of concern as she reached for his cheek.
“Drake, does it hurt? This is all my fault–I’ve ruined your marriage.”
Drake turned to her, his eyes glistening with affection.
“Penelope, I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
The sight made my skin crawl. I just wanted

to get away.
But Penelope stepped in front of me and grabbed my arm.
“Eloise, please don’t be mad. Tell me what I can do to make things right. I’ll do anything to ease your pain.”
I yanked my arm away, fed up. She yelped and stumbled backward.
Drake caught her immediately.
“Penelope! Your hand!”
A bright red scratch lined her arm. Tears welled in her eyes.
“I’m okay. It must’ve been Eloise’s ring that scratched me by accident”

I glanced at my ring–completely clean. And it hadn’t even touched her.
Drake’s face darkened.
“Eloise! How could you be so heartless, taking it out on Penelope? I didn’t want to believe those rumors at work saying you were cruel and harsh, but I should’ve known. After all those years in business, you’ve lost every ounce of kindness you once had.”
Penelope rushed to explain, “Drake, no! Eloise didn’t do it on purpose. It was my fault, I was careless.”
“Penelope, you’re just too kind—that’s why you still trust her.”
It felt like needles were stabbing my heart, one by one. And suddenly, I understood.

That’s why he loved Penelope.
But I became cold and ruthless for him.
When company elders embezzled funds, I gathered the evidence and had them all thrown in jail. Everyone said I was heartless, didn’t even spare my own.
When employees slacked off and chaos reigned, I cracked down and made them work overnight to clean up the mess.
When Marketing couldn’t seal the deals, I drank myself sick to close contracts.
All those so–called “sharp edges“-they were me trying to hold up his crumbling family business. I kept it all from him so he wouldn’t worry.
And yet… he never even noticed?

In the end, all these acts of love just became his reasons to hate me.
While Penelope’s softness and smiles became treasures he guarded like gold.
“Eloise! Are you even listening? God, you’re so slow sometimes. How do those CEOS even think you’re sharp?”
He pushed my shoulder.
“Whatever. Just take better care of Penelope from now on. Ditch the rings and jewelry -don’t want you accidentally hurting her again. She’s pregnant, you need to be careful.”
With trembling hands, I took off my ring and hurled it at them without hesitation.

Drake instinctively shielded Penelope like I’d just thrown a knife.
I let out a cold, mocking laugh and turned away.
“I’ll have my lawyer send over the divorce papers once they’re ready.”
Drake ran to block my path.
“Without the Sullivan name, you’re nothing. The title of Mrs. Sullivan is yours, the child is yours–Penelope’s giving up so much already. What more do you want?”
Penelope suddenly gasped, “Ah–it hurts.”
Drake instantly turned back to her.
I looked at the already–scabbed scratch on her arm, rolled my eyes, and drove away.
