Chapter 5
“Early–stage stomach cancer,” he growled, his jaw tight, fists clenched at his sides.“Callista, what kind of life have you been living all these years?”
I didn’t understand–why was he so angry?
The treatment was brutal. There were times I threw up until the world spun. But Alistair was always there, holding me steady by the shoulders.
One day, while I was getting an IV drip, my phone buzzed with a new post from Delphine Wynter.
A grid of nine photos–she was wearing my pajamas, lying on my former bed. The last photo was a close–up of a baby bottle, with

the caption.”‘Thanks to someone for making room. Now this finally feels like home.”
That post haunted me. That night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep through the pain.
Suddenly, something was slipped into my mouth–a peach–flavored candy that melted sweetly on my tongue.
“Sweet?“His voice was soft in the dark. His fingers brushed gently across the corner of my lips.
I finally drifted off.
A month later, he burst into my hospital room at dawn, holding a new test report in his hand.“All your numbers are normal!”
I looked at his tired face and messy hair. My nose stung.

“How long have you not slept?”
“Wait–what’s that smell in here?”
The air froze.
The ever–carefree Mr. Fenwyck actually turned his head, ears flushing red.
After a beat of silence, he stood abruptly.“I’m gonna take a shower.”
Recovery was slow but steady. I finally felt light again and finished two full bowls of oatmeat in one sitting.
The door opened again. Alistair walked in wearing a fresh white shirt. His hair was still damp, a few droplets trailing down his neck. The top two buttons were undone, revealing the sharp lines of his collarbone.

I swallowed hard–instinctively.
And I was certain of one thing:He was definitely trying to seduce me.
He looked genuinely happy to see me eating.
“Callista,” his eyes sparkled, “you’ll never have stomach pain again.”
He sat down on the sofa, hesitating for a long time before finally speaking.”Callista, could you… consider giving me a chance?”
Cough! Cough!I choked on my porridge and coughed violently.
He leaned in immediately, gently patting my back. He was so close I could smell the faint scent of his body wash.

When I looked up at him, those usually cheeky, devil–may–care eyes were suddenly misty–just like the golden retriever I had as a child.
That’s it. I sighed inwardly. The moment a woman starts feeling sorry for a man… she’s already falling.
“You and Damien already signed the divorce papers…” He lowered his gaze, his voice as soft as a feather. “Would you consider me instead?”
As soon as he said it, he suddenly stood up.”You don’t have to give me an answer now. When you’ve thought it through, call me. I won’t bother you in the meantime.”
He had barely walked out when I pulled out my phone and dialed.“I agree to what you proposed,” I said.

There was a soft chuckle on the other end.
“Mrs.Corwin–this will be the last time I call you that. Looking forward to working with you.”
Footsteps rushed toward the room, and the door burst open.
He wrapped me in his arms. He smelled especially good.
My gaze fell on the open collar of his shirt, and my heart started racing.
As if possessed, I cupped his face and kissed those thin lips.
His whole body froze. Then he snapped back to life and gripped my waist tightly.

The kiss was deep and lingering, until I gently pushed him away.“I’m still a patient…”
Alistair Fenwyck held my hand tightly, his eyes glowing.
“Callista, I’m so happy.”
For a second, I felt like a giant golden retriever was wagging its tail wildly in front
of me.
