Chapter 7
Life with Alistair was peaceful and warm. Color slowly returned to my cheeks, and my body was getting stronger by the day.
One afternoon, I was basking in the sun on a rattan chair in the garden when I suddenly heard rustling noises from behind the bushes.
“Slow down! Don’t get caught!”
“I just want to see what kind of girl could make Alistair so serious.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you two looking for me?”
A pair of kind–faced elderly people stumbled out, nudging each other. The old lady

smacked the old gentlemen playfully. “It’s all your fault!”
They sat on either side of me, their eyes sparkling as they studied me.
“You’re beautiful,” the old man said. “No wonder our boy fell so hard. He’s turned down so many women…”
“Don’t listen to him,” the old lady cut in quickly. “Alistair may seem like a flirt, but he’s loyal to the core.”
“We were worried because he’s almost thirty and still single, so we kept setting him up on blind dates. He pretended to be out partying just to make us mad.”
“Later, he confessed that there was someone he had loved for a long time–but he never got the chance..”

Just then, Alistair Fenwyck came running over, sweat on his forehead. “Grandpa! Grandma! Stop bothering her!”
The two elders exchanged a knowing smile. “See? Already protective.” They even winked at me before leaving.
Alistair looked a little embarrassed. “Sorry, I think my assistant told them you were here”
“They didn’t say anything weird, did they?”
I shook my head, watching the sunlight scatter across his lashes.
“Callista,” he said softly, “today’s my birthday. Would you come?”
I nodded.

That night, on a luxury cruise ship, Alistair looked absolutely stunning in a tailored suit. I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
But just as I was zoning out, I caught a familiar figure on a nearby yacht–Damien Corwin, standing beside Delphine Wynter.
I frowned and turned to walk away, but the sudden sound of hurried footsteps stopped
- me.
“Callista!”
Damien had somehow made it onto the ship. His eyes locked onto mine, filled with emotions I couldn’t decipher.
Alistair’s voice turned sharp. “Who let him. on?”
Damien rushed to me and grabbed my wrist.

“Callista! Where have you been? Why haven’t you come home?”
I yanked my hand away. “Mr.Corwin, we’re divorced. Where I go is none of your concern.”
His face went ghostly pale. “Callista, what are you saying?”
“I only signed those papers because I was furious. Besides, there was no official divorce certificate, no property division. That’s not a real divorce!”
“Come home with me!”
Alistair stepped between us. “Sorry, this is my cruise ship. Mr.Corwin and dogs are not allowed.”
Damien’s face drained of color. His eyes

reddened as he pointed at Alistair. “Who the hell are you? Are you the one keeping my wife hostage? I’m calling the police!”
Alistair sneered. “Hostage? Do you even know she was nearly assaulted? And where were you, her husband, when that happened?”
Damien froze. “Assaulted? Callista, why didn’t you-”
He suddenly remembered. That phone call, when I had begged for help–he’d thought I was just throwing a tantrum.
“Callista, I’m sorry. Delphine had a fever that day. I thought you were being dramatic, I didn’t-”
“Alistair’s not a good person! You shouldn’t be around him. He’s using you just to get

back at me!”
“Enough!” I cut him off. “I don’t want to see you again!”
Damien took a step toward me, but a high–pitched scream rang out behind him.
“Damien! The nanny said the baby’s sick! Come home with me now!” Delphine Wynter came running over–and reached out to grab
- me.
In the chaos, she and I both fell into the water.
“Help! I can’t swim! I don’t want to die!” Delphine thrashed around in the water.
Without hesitation, Damien dove in–straight toward her.

I should’ve stopped caring long ago, but watching him swim toward someone else still ripped a hole in my chest.
Strong arms pulled me out of the water. Alistair clutched me tightly.
“Don’t be scared. I’ve got you.”
When I woke up, Alistair was by my bedside, dark circles under his eyes.
Outside the hospital room, I heard arguing.
“Move! She’s my wife! Why won’t you let me see her?”
Beside Damien stood a woman, two one–year–old children crying at her feet.
“Damien, just go,” she pleaded.

He shoved her aside. “Get out of my way! I want to see her!”
I sat up slowly. “Let them in. All that yelling is giving me a headache.”
Damien burst into the room, face filled with panic. “Callista! Are you okay?”
I looked at him blankly.
“Who are you?”
