A week later, I went to Ryan’s office. Chris, his secretary, saw me and said: Mrs. Carter, Mr. Carter’s in a board meeting, but I’ve notified him. I nodded: My lawyer says he won’t sign the divorce papers. Chris looked uncomfortable. I didn’t press him, just chatted quietly with my lawyer. The door suddenly burst open. Ryan rushed in, speaking as he tried to embrace me: Baby, why didn’t you tell me you were coming? Mark Blake stood up abruptly, his long legs smoothly stepping between Ryan and me. Mr. Carter, I’m Mrs. Carter’s divorce attorney, Hello. Ryan’s heart jolted violently as his eyes searched my face desperately, hoping I would forgive him any second. Honey… Ryan called out to me again and again, his panic growing. Honey, you’re joking, right? I said I’d handle things with Emma. Why are you pushing for divorce? Mark interrupted again: Mr. Carter, do you have any issues with the agreement? If not, please sign here. Ryan ignored him, looking at me with bloodshot eyes: When I proposed, I told you the Carters only accept death parting us, never divorce.
Baby, we’re not getting divorced. Let’s go home. Ryan reached for me again. But just as his hand was about to touch me, Mark stepped forward quickly, his arm firmly blocking Ryan’s path. Mark’s face was stern. Mr. Carter, please refrain from touching my client. Ryan snarled hoarsely, his eyes blood–red: Get out of my way. Mark remained unmoved: I see you’re prepared to let news of the Carter Group CEO’s affair with the housekeeper hit the headlines. I wonder how your other shareholders will feel about that? Ryan froze, his face darkening: Are you threatening me? I watched them calmly: Ryan, you’re making this difficult. Just sign it. Your girlfriend’s baby can’t wait much longer, can she? At my words, Ryan’s eyes filled with tears, nearly driving him mad. Sign what? How could this just be about signing papers?! Autumn, it’s impossible, I’ll never divorce you!
