A week later, Kai called me first.[]
“Phoenix, let’s talk,” his voice sounded completely exhausted. “I’ve figured everything out.“[]
“Figured out what? That you want to choose your little childhood sweetheart after all?” I asked coldly.[]
“No, I… I’ve decided to cut off all contact with Raven.” His voice was barely audible, “Phoenix, can we start over? This time I promise I’ll never have anything to do with her again.“[]
“Promise?” I scoffed, “Kai Hawthorne, how long can your ‘promise‘ actually last?“[]
“I’m serious! I’ve thought it through–to me, she really is just a friend…“[]
He tried desperately to explain.[]
I was silent for a few seconds, then said flatly: “Too late.“]
“Phoenix, I admit I handled things badly before and caused misunderstandings, but what we have between us…‘
“Kai Hawthorne,” I cut him off, “I used to really love you–enough to do anything for you.“[]

“Fine. Let’s meet this afternoon. I’ve arranged for both our parents to be there so we can lay everything out in the open. I don’t want people talking behind my back even after we’re divorced.“]
Kai was quiet for a long time, then finally said: “Do you have to be so heartless?“]

At three PM, I picked up my parents and went to the Hawthorne house.[]
