Chapter 7
Once everyone left, Evelyn finally broke free from their grip and slowly dropped to her knees, completely heartbroken.
Her hands shook as she tried to gather Josie’s ashes, but the coldness she felt sent chills down her spine.
Emma cried so much that her voice was hoarse, and she looked exhausted and hopeless.
For the first time, Evelyn truly despised herself. Watching Emma collapse to the point of nearly losing her mind, she pulled herself together and wrapped her arms around her.
“Mom, don’t worry. We’ll leave in just four days,” she whispered.
Everything in the house had already been packed up. Evelyn didn’t plan on returning there. All she wanted now was to spend a few quiet, calm days with Emma.

But peace wouldn’t come so easily.

There was a loud knock at the door. When she opened it, a group of tall, tough–looking bodyguards stood there. Her face turned pale as fear crept
- in.
She clenched her teeth and asked carefully, “What do you want from me? I already left, just like they wanted. Isn’t that enough?”
One of the men stepped forward and replied, “Mr. Bensen asked us to bring you to Ms. Gearey’s birthday party.

“After all, you both used to be in the same field, and even worked at the same law firm before.
“Ms. Gearey hopes you’ll attend.”
Evelyn let out a cold laugh.
“And what if I say no?”
The leader gave a quick signal, and the bodyguards stormed in, pinning down Emma.
“Mr. Bensen said if you don’t attend, we’ll have no choice but to bring your mother instead.”
Tears welled up in Evelyn’s eyes again. Struggling to stay calm, she choked out, “Let my mom go! Fine, I’ll go! Isn’t that what you want?!”
They called it a party invite, but in reality, Evelyn was being dragged there like a prisoner.
When she got to the entrance, she immediately noticed Samantha and Theodore at the center of attention, surrounded by important guests.
Samantha no longer looked plain and simple like she did in the past. Her makeup was perfect, and her dress sparkled. With Theodore guiding her, she confidently mingled with powerful people.
Theodore kept sneaking glances at her, his eyes filled with warmth and admiration, like he was looking at a flower he had cared for and nurtured.
Evelyn knew that look well. During the two years he loved her most, he used to look at her the exact same way.
She hadn’t come prepared. Dressed in plain, casual clothes, her look was out of place. As she stepped inside, whispers and mocking comments

filled the air around her.
Then Samantha approached, lightly holding her dress as she walked.
“Everyone, please don’t say harsh things about Ms. Finchum. We did have disagreements in the past, but we’ve settled that now.
“And besides, Mr. Bensen and she have already parted ways on good terms. He loves me deeply now.”
Samantha wore a proud and sweet smile. Evelyn couldn’t help but glance at Theodore. When she noticed that he didn’t react at all to what Samantha said, her eyes started to sting with emotion.
Evelyn was ready to say something quick and slip away quietly.
But just then, Samantha leaned in and whispered in a voice meant only for them, “Ms. Finchum, what’s the rush? I’ve got a little surprise just for you today.”
As Evelyn noticed the weird curl in Samantha’s lips, an uneasy feeling crept into her.
And sure enough, in the very next moment, disturbing noises started to fill the room.
