“You’re right. You wouldn’t hurt me,” she said. “Jonathan probably just said those things to mess with me. I blamed you for nothing
Selina let out a long breath. Her fingers relaxed.
Deep down, she cursed Clarissa for still being the same clueless idiot.
Jonathan was too soft. Even after she humiliated him by running off with another man, he still had her back.
“Alright. Clare. Get some rest. I’ll head to my room.”
Once Selina stepped out, the ice in Clarissa’s eyes broke free.
Selina? Clarissa would make that damn girl pay for everything. The pain. The lies. The betrayal. One crack at a time.
She would shatter that trust Mom and Dad still had in her. And when it all fell apart, she’d settle the score. Every last one.
Clarissa was drained. Coming back from death and dealing with everything that followed had left her body running on fumes. Sleep took over before she could fight it.
She didn’t wake until noon.
The soft light pouring across her familiar bedroom felt almost unreal. Like she had dreamed the whole thing.
She took a deep breath, tossed the blanket off, and slid into her slippers. She walked over to the window, pulled open the curtains, and let the sunlight in. She meant to breathe in the fresh air, but one glance outside made her freeze.
A black car was parked at the gates.
Her breath caught. It was the Jeffersons‘ car.
Jonathan was here?
Her heart jumped. She rushed to get dressed, threw on water at the sink, and hurried downstairs without bothering to eat.
In the living room, Zack stood in front of Frederick and Penelope, calm as ever. In his hands was a green velvet box. Inside sat the emerald pendant.
“Mr. Chandler. Mrs. Chandler,” he said flatly. “The pendant has been returned. The engagement is off. I’ll be going now.”
Clarissa stepped onto the stairs just as those words hit the air.
Her whole face went pale.
Jonathan was calling it off?
“No! You can’t call it off!”
Her voice rang out sharp and loud.
Frederick and Penelope turned to look at her, startled. Frederick had already accepted the box. Zack glanced up at her, and his eyes flicked with irritation. He didn’t bother replying. He just turned and walked away.
Clarissa raced down the stairs, her panic kicking in fast. She moved to follow, but Penelope grabbed her arm hard. “Ilaven’t you embarrassed yourself enough?” she snapped. “What do you think you’re doing now?”
She had almost run off with another man just to avoid this marriage. Now that Jonathan pulled the plug, she wanted it back?

“Mom, I’m not trying to cause trouble,” Clarissa explained quickly. She looked out the door, trying to catch another glimpse of Zack. “But we can’t let the engagement end”
“Why you!”
Penelope’s whole body shook with rage. She couldn’t believe this was her daughter.
“Clare, you’re the one who begged to have it called off,” Frederick reminded, holding Penelope steady. He gave Clarissa a warning look. “The Jeffersons made their decision. Don’t stir things up again. Go back to your room. Don’t make your mother sicker.”
Clarissa looked toward the car outside. Zack had already gotten in. She pressed her lips together and said nothing.
Then, she turned and went back upstairs.
The second she got inside, she pulled out her phone and called Jonathan. Blocked. He had cut her off.
That couldn’t happen.
She had to explain everything. He couldn’t just walk away like that. Not now.
Clarissa stood up and marched toward the door. But the moment she opened it, two maids stepped in her path.
“Miss Clarissa,” one of them said gently, “Madam’s orders. You’re to stay in your room for the next few days. No exceptions.”
Clarissa’s expression darkened. So, her mother had locked her in to stop her from going after Jonathan?
Everyone in the Chandler household answered to Penelope. If she said no, then there was no way out. Clarissa didn’t fight them. She didn’t scream‘ and simply asked to see Selina instead.
The maids nodded and passed on her message.
Five minutes later, Selina came in.
