Chapter 16 Group Chat
Jonathan froze. His whole body turned cold. So, this is what it was.
A bitter smile crept across his lips.
“Clare?” the voice called again when Clarissa didn’t answer.
He ended the call.
Right then, Clarissa came out of the lounge.

Her clothes were neat again. She looked composed. Her face was still flushed, and her lips were a little swollen–like nothing had changed.
Jonathan’s smile disappeared.
She really went that far–all for Gregory. He picked up the phone, dialed a number, and spoke flatly. “Come in, Zack. Take Clarissa out.”
Zack burst through the door in less than ten seconds. He hadn’t gone far at all. He’d been standing right outside, waiting.
“Take Clarissa out,” Jonathan repeated, his tone icy. “And let every employee know–starting today, she’s not allowed inside this company again.”
Clarissa had just stepped out of the lounge, still dazed from earlier. She looked around, confused. “Wait, what?”
That couldn’t be right.
They’d just talked it through. He even said he’d think about the engagement, so why was he flipping out all of a sudden?
“Yes, sir!” Zack’s face lit up.
He had waited forever for this. Finally, he could throw Clarissa out himself.
“Jonathan-”
Clarissa stared at him. None of this made sense.
“Out!”
Jonathan’s voice came sharp and cold. Buried under it was pure disappointment. He wasn’t just mad–he was done.
Zack grabbed her without blinking and dragged her toward the exit.
Everyone around watched.
No way. Mr. Jefferson actually kicked someone out? With his words?
Usually, Clarissa was the one storming around, yelling at him.
However, today was different–Jonathan had finally turned the tables. It looked like he was really done with Clarissa. Maybe this time, he meant it.
Clarissa looked crushed as she got tossed out of the Jefferson Group. She couldn’t get back in. She couldn’t call him. And worst of all, she didn’t even know what had made him snap. With no other option, she returned to the Chandler Mansion, looking beaten.
“Clare-”
Selina had been waiting the whole time.

As soon as she saw Clarissa, she rushed over, only for Clarissa to slam the door in her face.
Selina flinched and stepped back. She stared at the door, frowning. Clarissa had been losing it these past few days.
One minute she was fine, and the next, she was slamming doors like a maniac.
A text came through.
Selina looked down. It was from Gregory, who wrote, “Selina, Jonathan already let me out. I’m at the hospital now.”
Her eyes narrowed. Jonathan let him go?

That meant Clarissa hadn’t lied. She really had gone to beg Jonathan for Gregory’s release. After she barely stepped out of Jonathan’s office, Gregory was already free.
Selina dropped all suspicion.
Clarissa was still the same fool, still hung up on Gregory.
There was nothing to worry about.
Upstairs, Clarissa sat in her room, staring at the text she sent Jonathan. The one that failed to get through.
She had messed up. She should have made him promise to take her off his block list while he was still soft.
D*mn. Men needed time. They couldn’t be rushed. She had just come back. There were still other things she needed to handle.
She walked over to her desk, sat down, and powered up her laptop. After a moment, she logged into an old account she hadn’t touched in ages.
It was a clean account. Only a few contacts in it, and one muted group chat.
The group had five people. They would drop in now and then to post little pieces of their lives.
Clarissa took a deep breath, placed her fingers on the keyboard, and typed a single line. “It’s been a long time. I’m back…”
The message sent, and the group went completely still.
A full minute passed before one message popped up. Christopher the Miracle Worker texted, “Heh.”
