Jonathan couldn’t believe Clarissa had actually brought him a gift. And it wasn’t just him–George found it hard to wrap his head around, too.
He had just finished saying that Clarissa hated Jonathan and would never want to be with him, and now here she was, showing up with presents. Honestly, it made his face sting a little.
Jonathan forced down the storm raging inside him and took the gift from the secretary. Inside was a belt–and a small card.
On the card were a few neatly written lines. ‘Mr. Jefferson, I picked this out just for you–so please do me a favor and accept it, okay? And don’t forget, you promised to reconsider not calling off the engagement. I hope you really will think it over! Also…. could you let me out of that little “blocked” list on WhatsApp?
At the end, there was even a cute little teary emoji.
Jonathan’s large hand clenched around the card, tightening with each passing second.
George sat upright, posture rigid, but his eyes kept drifting toward the card Jonathan was holding. He couldn’t make out all the words, but he caught glimpses–and saw the teary little emoji at the end. For a second, it felt like the world had gone sideways.
Is this really Clare? Is she really not possessed? He couldn’t help wondering.
Jonathan slid the card into his pocket and asked coldly. “Where is Clarissa?”
“Miss Chandler already left,” the secretary replied.
Left? She didn’t even come up to say a word–just dropped off the gift and walked away? What the hell is she trying to do? Is toying with my feelings really that fun for her?
George had the same impression–he thought Clarissa was just being ridiculous. Did she bring this gift just to mess with him?
“I’ll speak to her when I get back,” he said, rising from his seat. “Give me the gift–I’ll return it to her.”
He reached for the bag, but Jonathan snatched it up first.
“You’re welcome to discipline your sister as you see fit,” Jonathan mentioned coolly. “But whether I keep or toss the gift she sent–that’s for me to decide.”
just as George was rendered speechless by Jonathan’s words, his phone rang He glanced at the name and picked up.
The mall manager’s voice came through loud and clear on the other end. “Mr. Chandler, Miss Clarissa came to the mall today and bought a bunch of men’s clothing. She also had an incident there with Miss Gosling…”
The manager’s voice was loud enough that Jonathan heard every word. George glanced at Jonathan, whose face had darkened, and quickly turned the volume down. And so, whatever else the manager said about Clarissa and Chloe arguing- Jonathan didn’t catch it.
He stared at the belt in his hands, heart growing colder by the second.
So, she went shopping for men’s clothes with Chloe. Must’ve all been for Gregory. And this belt? Just her way of mocking me.
Meanwhile, Clarissa had no idea yet that another huge misunderstanding was brewing.
She returned home with bags upon bags of gifts.
She’d gotten something for everyone–even the butler and the kitchen staff. Frederick and Penelope each got gifts, too.
Frederick beamed with delight as he held his, and while Penelope didn’t say anything, she was clearly overjoyed inside. So what if their daughter wasn’t impressive by society’s standards? As long as she was well–behaved and sensible, that was enough.

Selina watched from the side, growing increasingly anxious. She pulled Clarissa aside and whispered, “Clare, why did you call the police on Chloe? And why did you kick Gregory out of the hospital? What are you trying to do?!”
When Selina first heard the news, she thought she was hallucinating. She couldn’t figure Clarissa out at all anymore. What was she trying to pull? Why had she suddenly turned so cold toward the Gosling siblings?
“Isn’t it obvious what I’m doing?” Clarissa looked at her lazily. “The real question is–why are you so eager to defend them?”
