I staggered from his grip, dizzy, my voice hollow and robotic.
“Liar!” he roared, trembling with fury.
“What did Sophie ever do to you? Just because she’s my ex–wife? That fact will never change!”
I looked at this stranger of a man with numb eyes and a raspy voice:
“James, she stood in a wedding dress yesterday, in front of dozens of guests.
Grandpa Carter may live in a church, but he’s not cut off from the world.”
James froze like someone waking from a dream. He clutched my wrists tightly.
“Olivia, I… I wasn’t thinking clearly. I’m sorry.”

His voice cracked, and his hot tears dropped onto the back of my hand.
“Please… beg Grandpa for me. Only you can convince him to let Sophie stay.”
When I said nothing, he actually dropped to his knees.
“We’ll get our marriage license tomorrow! Whatever you want–anything!”
I stared at his trembling shoulders and suddenly laughed.
“Fine. Just one condition.”
“Name it!” he looked up, eyes wide with hope.
“Cancel the engagement. And never show up in my life again.”
“No! I can’t lose you!” he shouted hoarsely like a caged beast.

“But I can’t abandon Sophie either-”
I cut him off.
“Relax. I’ll tell Grandpa I dumped you. None of this is your fault, alright?”
I pushed past him, trying to walk steadily despite the dizziness. James hurried to support me.
“Olivia, it’s not what you think… Forget it. We’ll get the license tomorrow. That should

He sped to the airport’s VIP lounge.
Grandpa Carter waved us over kindly.

I took a deep breath.
“Grandpa, I want to give them my blessing.”
As soon as the words left my lips, Sophia grabbed a bottle of liquor from the table and smashed it against her own head.
Blood streamed down her face.
She shoved James away and knelt toward me with a mocking smile.
“via, if I die, I won’t be in your way anymore. James and I are innocent–I won’t
accept being falsely accused!”
Before she finished, she collapsed.
Grandpa Carter is a devout Christian and
cannot tolerate such scenes He scoffed and walked away in disgust.
Only James’s wailing remained:

“Olivia, save her! You’re a doctor–you must know what to do!”
I steadied myself against the sofa, heart turning cold.
After all these years, he didn’t even know I was an internist–I don’t treat trauma patients.
I called an ambulance and turned to leave.
James suddenly grabbed the wine bottle and hurled it at me, his eyes venomous.
“Olivia! How can you be so heartless? If anything happens to Sophie, I’ll never forgive you!”
The bottle slammed into the back of my head.
Blinding pain erupted. Warm liquid trickled down my neck.

My vision blurred. I collapsed.
Through the haze, I saw a familiar figure rush in and punch James to the ground.
“You piece of trash! A twice–married scumbag like you should be thanking your ancestors for getting Olivia! And you dare treat her like this? Let me teach you a lesson today!”
