James stood frozen, a buzzing in his
ears.
“Mr. Carter,” the doctor said, “your wife’s external injuries are fine, but
the fetus is already five months along. It’s underdeveloped, and she needs to be hospitalized for observation.”
Five months?
But he had only gone to France three months ago to find her.
The child wasn’t his.
The rest of the doctor’s words blurred
as James turned and stormed toward
the room.
“Sophia!” he roared. “Why did you lie
to me?!”

The woman on the bed looked up in
panic, pale and tear–streaked.
“Jimmy, I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
He felt nauseated.
Three months ago, that exact pitiful expression had gotten him into her
bed.
James took a deep, shaky breath, his chest heaving.
“You said you were only with that man because he was terminally ill. You said you were just accompanying him at the end, and that nothing happened between you.”
Sophia’s eyelashes fluttered violently,
tears spilling like pearls.

“Jimmy, he forced me–I didn’t want
to…”
James let out a cold laugh.
“He was too sick to even get out of bed–how the hell did he force you? Sophia, can you tell even one truth?”
He pointed a trembling finger at her swollen belly, his voice hoarse.
“You know what? Even if there hadn’t
been this baby, I still would’ve taken
care of you. I said you were my ex–wife, my responsibility!”
“But why did you lie to me? Why did you make me play the fool–made me
lose Olivia!”
Sophia looked at him, bewildered.
“Lose Olivia? But… I thought you

Sophia looked at him, bewildered.
“Lose Olivia? But… I thought you
didn’t like her. What does it matter?”
“Who said I didn’t like her?!” he
roared, fists clenched.
The words exploded out of him before
he could stop them.
Startled by his own outburst, he
softened his tone.
“People’s feelings change…”
Or maybe… they never did.
At the beginning, saying Olivia was his one true love was just a line to placate
her.
It didn’t take much. A simple phrase

But slowly, he had begun to mean
- it. Each time he said it, he meant it
more.
Olivia was amazing. She absolutely deserved to be someone’s one and
only.
Sophia’s eyes brimmed with sorrow.
“Jimmy, when we met three years. ago, you begged me to marry you just weeks later. You said you were sure I
was the one. Was all of that… a lie?”
“You always said you had a
responsibility to me. But forget that— just answer me this: Did you ever love
me?”
The question hit James hard.
He tried to recall.

merit.
She was cheerful, driven, unbound by
expectations.
Unlike Olivia–always dutiful, never
complaining, marrying someone she didn’t love just to satisfy her parents.
She was so obedient, so soft, it made
him angry.
He didn’t want to be like her, a pawn
in his grandfather’s plans.
So his first act of rebellion was
marrying Sophia just weeks after meeting her.
“Jimmy!” Sophia’s voice cracked as she cried, “Is it really that hard to

Her fingers dug into her palms, her heart already heavy with the answer.
Such a simple question–and he stayed silent for five whole minutes.
“Maybe… for a moment, I did.” James finally spoke, voice disturbingly calm.
But by the third day of their marriage,
he’d already regretted it.
That night, he deliberately let it slip at a family gathering, making sure Grandpa Carter found out.
All these years, the so–called “responsibility” he claimed to bear for Sophia was just a cover for his guilt.
Because of guilt, he wanted to give her a child. Because of guilt, he sided with her again and again—until he’d

Sophia suddenly dropped to her
knees.
“Jimmy, please—don’t say things just
to hurt me.”
James turned away, voice clear and
cold.
“Sophia, go back to France. Don’t
contact me again.”
Behind him came the sound of
gut–wrenching sobs, but he didn’t
stop.
Everyone must pay for their reckless youth eventually.
Fortunately, it’s not too late to win
Olivia back.
