Matthew quickly arranged for me to
be transferred to another hospital, citing the need to avoid “unrelated people” disturbing my recovery.
Who that person was–went without
saying.
But to our surprise, James showed up the very night I was transferred.
When the door swung open, Matthew
was sitting by my bed, carefully spooning medicine to me.
James froze in the doorway, his gaze locked on us. His Adam’s apple
bobbed, but not a word came out.
Matthew and I exchanged a glance. In perfect sync, we chose to ignore him.

James gritted his teeth, then stepped inside with a bouquet and a basket of fruit, his voice hoarse:
“Olivia.”
Standing by the bed, his fingers
curled unconsciously. “Can we talk…
alone?”
“No,” Matthew snapped coldly.
“You’re not welcome here.”
James ignored the hostility. With a
dull thud, he suddenly dropped to his
knees beside my hospital bed.
He lowered his head, not daring to
look at me.
“Olivia, I’ve made unforgivable
mistakes these past few years.
Whether you believe me or not, I just

want you to know the truth…”
I looked down, voice calm: “I’m not
interested.”
He flinched, but pushed on anyway, speaking fast like he feared being cut off again:
“Sophia’s child… was a posthumous. baby. It wasn’t mine.”
“I married her three years ago just to defy the Carters. Everything I did for her afterward–was out of guilt.”
“And when I said I loved you….. I meant
it.”
By now, his voice was choked with
sobs.
“Olivia, it’s over between me and
Sophia. Please… forgive me?”

I pressed my hand against my temple, the throbbing pain unbearable.
Matthew immediately understood, gently massaging my acupoints as his sharp gaze sliced toward James.
“A grown man sobbing like this? Pathetic. My fiancée needs rest. Go cry somewhere else if you’re so desperate
for a scene.”
James didn’t flinch. His dark eyes
stayed locked on me.
“Olivia, if you’ll just come back with me, I’ll change–anything you want…”
“Enough!” I snapped. “I’ve said it a hundred times–we’re over. Why can’t you get that through your head?! We’re done. Finished. Do you
understand?”

I hurled my water glass at him.
It struck his forehead and blood
immediately began to seep out.
He didn’t even flinch. Instead, he
smiled–twisted, broken.
“Hit me all you want, Olivia. If it
makes you feel better, I’ll take it.”
A wave of pain surged in my skull, and I lost control–grabbing anything within reach. The medicine bottle, fruit tray, flower vase–everything went flying at him.
James never dodged. Blood soaked
through the white collar of his shirt.
Matthew pulled me into his arms, his warm lips brushing over my trembling eyelids.

“Shhh… Liv. Don’t look. Don’t think.
Just sleep. I’m right here…”
I finally calmed down and, under the medicine’s influence, drifted into a
heavy sleep.
Matthew’s face darkened. He grabbed James by the tie and dragged him out
of the room.
The moment the door shut, he picked up a metal trash can from the hallway
and slammed it down on James’s
head.
James staggered, dazed, with vegetable soup dripping from his hair.
He wiped his face and lunged forward to retaliate—only to get a brutal side
kick to the stomach.
He crashed into the wall, then hit the

ground hard, coughing up blood.
Wiping the corner of his mouth,
James roared:
“You psycho! Can’t you talk like a normal person without throwing punches?!”
Matthew looked down at him, then
gave a slow, mocking smile.
“You? A cheating, abusive,
twice–married scumbag? You think
you deserve a civilized conversation?”
“When Liv hears your voice and instantly gets a splitting headache- have you ever stopped to think you’re
not even worthy of speaking?”
“I…” James froze, pupils constricting. “Who the hell are you?”

Matthew crouched down and grabbed
him by the hair.
“I’m the guy who grew up with her, who’s been in love with her for over a
decade–your worst nightmare.”
James suddenly exploded with rage. “So you two were already messing around behind my back?!”
Matthew slapped him so hard he hit
the floor again.
“That filthy mouth of yours–still calling me her side piece?”
“If it weren’t for how much she used to love you… you think I would’ve backed off five years ago?”
He leaned closer, voice low and smug.

“Honestly? I should thank you. You screwed up so bad, you shoved her
right back into my arms.”
With that, Matthew turned and
walked off.
James scrambled up to follow,
but two men in black immediately
restrained him.
“Master James,” one of them said respectfully, “Grandpa Carter would
like a word.”
