Though my father–in–law remained silent, his gaze on me was utterly sharp.
Covering my slapped cheek. I looked up at my in–laws.
“When did you know about them?”

My mother–in–law was stunned for a second before glancing at my flat. belly with disdain.
“You can’t get pregnant. No matter what, Bonnie is our daughter–in–law.
“Her baby will carry on the Trivett family’s bloodline.”
My father–in–law frowned but didn’t contradict her.
He said, “We were being generous enough letting you marry into our
family.
“Time for you to compromise. If you keep this up, we don’t mind getting. Harlan a new wife.”
In the next second, I smiled and said, “Alright.”
Meanwhile, my tears streamed down my cheeks uncontrollably.
Hearing my response, Harlan instinctively loosened his embrace around Bonnie.
As he was about to walk over to me, she suddenly clutched her belly and whimpered, “It … hurts…”
Immediately, my in–laws supported her and walked out, heading to the

Harlan gritted his teeth, warning me not to mention a word about the divorce in front of his parents, and walked out.
I was left alone, enduring the mocking, disdainful gazes of the servants.
No need to wait for another two days.
I strode out of the Trivett’s villa and hailed a cab to the hospital.
Before I was wheeled into the operating room, through the ajar door, I saw Harlan hold Bonnie’s hand, his eyes.
He said to her, “I won’t let go again. I will never leave you.”
His promise was so familiar, reminding him of seven years ago.
Back then, he cried, telling me how sorry he was while kneeling by my hospital bed.
Only now did I realize there had been signs, shouting out how hypocritical his love was.
As Bonnie put on an act, telling everyone how much pain she was in, they attended meticulously to her every need. In another room, my baby left me
forever.
I felt intermittent cramps in my abdomen after I opened my eyes, which was the only proof telling me I had once had a baby.
I was hospitalized for three days; during this time, Harlan never called
- me.
Meanwhile, Bonnic mailed me the signed divorce papers.
She also sent me a bunch of provocative voice messages.

“Fiona, you better fulfill your promise.”
“What happened last time was nothing. If you dare to play me, I’ll make sure you suffer.”
I clutched the document, not responding to her.
After being discharged, I placed one copy on the nightstand.
I packed up and walked out, only to see Harlan, who had just come back.
He looked at my suitcase, puzzled.
“What are you doing? Are you running away from home? You’re almost thirty now, Fiona. Stop being so childish.”
I smiled brightly at him. “It’s just a little trip.”
And I’d leave you forever.
I added silently.
He glanced at me, feeling a bit surprised. Nodding, he said, “It’s probably for the best.”
I arrived at the airport soon without anyone in my way.
Before boarding the plane, I sent all the materials that I’d organized to Harlan.
In the next second, my phone buzzed non–stop.
I yanked out the SIM card swiftly.
From now on, I only lived for myself.
