Chapter 9
Nicole’s leg was completely crushed and bleeding. Without a second thought, Alexander scooped her up and dashed toward the hospital.
Yet with her arms clinging to Alexander’s neck, Nicole sobbed out Jennifer’s name.
“It was her, it was her. She saw the elevator was broken, shoved me inside, then ran out herself.”
Hearing this, Jennifer froze as if struck by lightning.
“Not me!”
She protested instantly.
But Alexander was already seething, deaf to her defense.
“You’re vicious. Lock her in that elevator too.”
At his command, Jennifer stood numb, stunned he’d condemn her to danger over a single accusation.
She was hauled into the elevator, watching helplessly as the doors sealed. shut, plunging her into darkness.
The elevator still malfunctioned. Suddenly, the floor vanished beneath her feet.
The doors gave way with a screech.
Warped metal slammed into her leg, agony exploding through her bones.

Jennifer blacked out completely…
Until the sharp sting of disinfectant pierced her nostrils.
She forced her eyes open.
“Jennifer, you’re awake?”
The nurse swapped her IV bag while dressing her wounds. “Your leg bone was shattered. You were drenched in blood when you arrived. Any later, we’d have amputated.”
Alexander was ice–cold, wounding those closest to him.
Especially when she’d long faded from his sight.
Jennifer stared blankly at the ceiling, then let out a hollow laugh.
Alexander’s frantic rescue of Nicole replayed in her mind.
He could love just not her.
She dragged herself up and called her mother. “Bring my packed luggage to the airport tomorrow morning.”
Faint curses crackled through the phone. “If you leave, never come back.”
Jennifer dug her nails into her palms. She and Alexander were done.
She’d vanish from his world, taking every trace of herself
Her new life began now.
