Chapter 4
Helen grabbed my hair with both hands. Without thinking, I reached up and yanked her hair back with one hand.
The pulling stopped all of a sudden. I barely had time to react before a huge force slammed me hard onto the floor.
I felt blood rise in my throat, but I forced it down.
“Eloise, are you crazy? Helen is disabled, and you still went after her? Since when did you become so cruel?” Jaxon stared at me with hatred, his voice cold and full of hate.
“I’m okay, Jaxon. Don’t be angry at her,” Helen said, looking weak as she leaned against him.

“You’ll regret this!” he said, glaring at me with disgust before walking off
with her.
I kept telling myself not to expect anything from him anymore, yet when I saw his cold expression, I still cried in pain.
A week passed, and I was back on the operating table.
This time, he didn’t even bother explaining.
“Go ahead and cut. Skip the anesthesia,” Jaxon said coldly as I slowly regained consciousness.
“But without numbing the area, most people can’t handle the pain,” the anesthesiologist said, clearly unsure.
“If anything happens, I’ll take the blame. She needs to pay for hurting Helen.”

They didn’t give me anything to dull the pain. When the knife cut my skin, I shook and cried out from the agony.
“Mr. Crawford, this…” The doctor froze, shaken by my cries, and glanced at Jaxon with hesitation.
“Keep going. We need enough for next week’s treatment.” His voice was firm, though a trace of reluctance flickered in his eyes.
The pain was too much. I couldn’t take it and blacked out.
Before everything went dark, I felt someone’s large hand brush over my damp forehead.
A soft voice seemed to reach me. “Eloise, behave, and you won’t have to hurt so much in the future.”
His voice was full of pain, but all I felt was bitter irony.
I forced myself to speak. I wanted to tell him I had no future.
Running away wasn’t on my mind anymore. I knew it wouldn’t work anyway. Jaxon would track me down without much effort.
In the three months I spent in the hospital, I went through eight surgeries. The flesh on my thighs kept being removed and growing back, only to be cut again. The pain had become so constant that my legs felt nothing anymore.
It wasn’t until the doctor told me I could leave that I realized I was going back.
The place I returned to was a villa that Jaxon bought for me during our first month together. He had picked out everything inside based on what I liked, and even the decorations matched my taste.
I packed everything in a single day and called a recycling service. Things that could be reused were taken away. I had burned the rest. I didn’t want

any reminders left behind.
On the third night, Jaxon called me out of nowhere.
“Come to Bluewing Ballroom now.” His tone was soft, a little slurred. He’d been drinking.
Bluewing Ballroom was the place where he proposed to me.
