Chapter 5
My heart skipped a beat. But before I could say anything, the call ended. I realized he didn’t have the patience to wait for my reply.
Pain twisted in my stomach, making me look even paler. Before heading out, I still took three pills to dull the ache.
When I stepped into the banquet hall, every pair of eyes turned my way. Noticing the big screen wishing Helen a joyful and peaceful life, I finally understood the event was for her.
I turned to look at her. She was standing beside Jaxon, raising her eyebrows slightly. Maybe they were celebrating her legs getting better.
The funny thing was that Jaxon didn’t know her legs were never injured at all.
She faked the whole thing just to see how much he cared about her. And yet, he believed everything she said but never trusted me.
“Eloise, I’m truly sorry for calling you out this late.” Helen said, picking up a glass of white wine and walking toward me with a sweet smile. “Jaxon said you could hold your liquor and asked you to drink in my place.”
She handed me the wine like she was being thoughtful. “Don’t listen to him too much. Just finish this one and go home. Jaxon will handle the
rest for me.”
I walked past her and looked directly at Jaxon, who was leaning against the table. “Do you want me to drink this?”
He looked surprised that I asked. After a short pause, he smiled. “Eloise, everyone knows you’ve got a strong tolerance. No need to act shy.”

“Yes, you used to beat everyone in drinking competitions!”
“It’s been ages since I last drank with Eloise.”
The moment he spoke, the others joined in cheerfully.
“What if I told you this drink could kill me?” I ignored their laughter and stared at Jaxon. I gripped the wine glass tightly
Over the years I was with him, I drank for his sake more than I could count. My stomach had bled multiple times, and my health was falling
apart.
This table full of alcohol was only pushing me faster toward death.
Jaxon’s smile faded. He frowned and instinctively took a step forward, “Don’t be so dramatic, Eloise.”
Helen’s eyes flashed, and her words stopped him. “It’s just some wine. How can it kill you? Are you trying to get his attention by acting like you’re fragile?”
Jaxon finally said, “Stop overreacting, Eloise. Helen can’t handle it. You
drink for her.”
My heart shattered completely. I looked at the glass I held and drank it.
The room went silent. Everyone watched as I drank, one glass at a time. By the seventh, I suddenly threw up. Blood was mixed in.
Jaxon’s face tensed. He reached out without thinking.
But Helen stepped in. “Eloise, that’s enough. No matter how good you are, you can’t always drink for me. I’ll take care of the rest.”
She picked up a glass and lifted it toward her lips.
“If she likes to drink, let her!”

I wiped my mouth, endured the embarrassment, and took the glass from Helen’s hand again.
Just as I reached her, she fell backward and hit her head on the table edge.
A slap sent me crashing to the ground, and the glass shattered in my hand. Blood dripped from my face and hands, and the pain made my face turn pale.
Jaxon only rushed over to Helen, lifted her, and headed straight for the door.
“Jaxon, I’m hurting too…” I called out, unable to stop myself.
His steps slowed for a second, but he still walked out, holding Helen tightly. The door slammed behind them.
Life was so tiring. I wished I could die now.
When the door shut, I completely lost the will to live.
