Chapter 8
I just thought it was ridiculous. Why was he clinging to my ashes now?
I never wanted him to die for love.
Alice truly deserved to be called my best friend. She understood me well.
She lifted her chin slightly and whispered instructions to the bodyguards behind her.
“Get him out of the water. Don’t let him die here.
“Eloise wouldn’t want someone like him polluting the ocean she loved so
much.”
Two hours later, Jaxon was dragged out and rushed to a hospital nearby.
The ambulance sped away.
I followed quietly, floating along.
Inside the ambulance, Jaxon tightly clenched his right hand, refusing to open it no matter how hard the medics tried.
In the end, they gave up.
Why was he doing that? I was already gone.
He only stayed in the hospital overnight.
The following day, even though he could barely stand, he ignored the doctor’s warnings and drove back.
He went straight to the villa we used to share.

Jaxon stood in front of the door and tried the code four times, but it didn’t
work.
Only when he typed in his birthday did the lock finally unlock.
Then, my voice came through. “Welcome back.”
Joy rushed through him, and his eyes lit up. He quickly opened the door and walked in.
“Eloise, I knew you wouldn’t-”
But what greeted him was a dusty, empty living room.
The only thing I left was that voice recording on the lock.
“No, you won’t leave me like this…”
Jaxon lost control, searching everywhere for any traces of me.
But I had already cleared everything out long ago.
I made sure nothing of me remained.
He searched every room–drawers, closets, even the basement.
Eventually, he sat down by the door, hitting the lock again and again, as if hoping my voice would appear one more time.
Just then, Liam called. “Jaxon, I found out Eloise gave Alice her will before she died. She also left a box, and the doctor handed over her phone. You-”
Before Liam could finish, Jaxon stood up fast. He grabbed his keys and walked straight to the garage.
“Find out where Alice lives.”

When Jaxon arrived at Alice’s home, he suddenly recognized that it was the same place I used to rent during my college days.
Back then, I often brought him here when he was drunk and looked after him.
His nose stung, and his eyes grew red again.
Those memories stayed clear in his mind.
As he walked up to the door, two bodyguards stopped him.
“I need to speak with Alice,” he said.
“Ms. Quinlan made it clear–anyone’s welcome except you and that
monster.”
“I just want to talk-”
“Leave now!”
Right after they shoved him away, he caught one of them muttering, disgust in his tone, “He used his fiancée’s flesh and child just to save his lover. He’s trash! You should’ve thrown him out harder.”
“We live under law. We can’t kill him.”
“But Ms. Mitchell is gone because of him. Isn’t that worth justice?”
“You can’t say it like that…”
Their voices got lower.
Jaxon’s face turned pale, and the pain inside overwhelmed him.
He suddenly coughed up blood, and it nearly splattered on the doorstep.
Luckily, the bodyguards quickly stepped forward to shield it.
