After that day, I never saw Lucas again.
When I happened to go back to my old home, passing by the garden, I saw all the daisies there had died.
It was clear they had been carefully tended.
The soil was moist, fertilizer piled around the roots. Every method had been tried but failed to save them.
There were dense, tiny footprints on the soil path.
The daisies were planted very close together. I imagined Lucas not wanting to step on them, so he transformed into his beast form, using his pincers to carry fertilizer.
Bit by bit, day by day, using all his strength, yet helplessly watching them die.
“Olivia, stop wasting your effort.”
Whenever he saw me fertilizing the daisies, Lucas would snap at me.
“I don’t like these things.”
I just smiled.

Because I knew, every night, he would transform into a little scorpion and roll around in the daisy patch.
Lucas grew up on the edge of the Federation.
I had never been there, but often heard that beast–people who came from there did all kinds of bad things.
It wasn’t that they were inherently bad.
They would rather go to Federation prison than return to that hell.
So naturally, Lucas had never seen such fresh things before.
Though he clearly liked them very much, he stubbornly denied it, afraid I would see through his emotions.
“Why do you keep smiling at me? What’s so funny?”

He tried to hide his panic.
“I like smiling.”
“I like you too.”
As soon as the words came out, Lucas was like a startled cat, even tripping over his own tail.
Very clumsy.
But at that moment, he showed his most genuine self.
There must have been a flutter of the heart then.

His evasive eyes, unconsciously curled fingers.
The image was too vivid. I couldn’t see him as Ethan. He was just Lucas, an arrogant, inarticulate silly scorpion.
My thoughts returned to the present.
I continued walking towards the house.
Inside was exactly the same as when I left.
The stuffed animal that had been thrown away was sitting neatly in the glass cabinet.
Lucas had picked it up, washed it clean, and even sprayed it with perfume.
A painful groan seeped out from the half–open bedroom door.

i remembered the tiles I had laid down were originally milky white, but now they had a blue tinge.
His blood had long since permeated the entire house.
“Lucas.”
He stopped his movements.
Throwing away the broken scorpion tail, shaking with pain but not using his ability to heal.
“You came……”
His voice was very weak.
A breeze could blow it away.
“Go away, don’t mind me……
་
“I didn’t say I was here to take care of you. I just came back to get some things.”
I waved the bag in my hand.

Lucas tilted his head, his half–closed eyes opening.
He pulled at the corners of his mouth, making a strange expression.
“Do I look good when I smile?”
“Ugly as hell.”
The comers of his mouth flattened. He nodded, adjusting for a long time, looking worse and worse.
“Forget it.”
“I don’t like smiling.”
He paused.
“I like you.”

If anything, I felt a bit nauseated.
“You asked me before, what I would do if you left one day!”
“I’ll tell
you now.”

He picked up the scorpion tail and stabbed it directly into his own heart.
Blue blood splattered onto my face.
In his violently contracting pupils, I saw his pale face gradually losing life.
“You are my only reason for existing.”
“Olivia, without you, I can’t go on living.”
