Chapter 11
Watching Seraphina squirm, scared out of her mind, was the best damn thing I’d seen all year.
But she didn’t confess everything like I expected.
Instead, she shoved all the blame on Luke.
Crying, screaming-it was all “Luke’s idea,” and she was just a poor girl who got caught up in it.
So began the dogfight.
Luke, not one to be made a scapegoat, pulled out their letters.
Yup-love notes, secret plans, all of it.
In one, Seraphina wrote about being forced into a ghost marriage and how badly she wanted to run.
She never named me directly, but it proved she was planning to bolt.
The General held up the letters.
“Got anything left to say?”
Seraphina looked at him with tear-filled, pleading eyes.
‘General, I didn’t mean to… You said you loved me. Please… Please help me.”
He let out a cold laugh and pulled me into his arms.
‘I only acted like that ’cause my wife asked me to. You really think I’d care for a woman like you?”
Seraphina stared at him like her whole world had just shattered.
‘No… You let me stay in the west wing, gave me dresses and jewelry… You… you cared…”
She kept mumbling like she was losing it.
That was all my wife’s idea. You think I’d ever make her cry for your sake?”
He looked down at me, eyes full of warmth.
glanced at Seraphina, still lying on the floor.
That broken, pitiful expression….
t was the same one I had in my past life.
Now it was finally her turn.
She’s gonna try to off herself!”
Captain Silas was quick-he stopped her just as she lunged for the stone wall.
