Chapter 7 No Tears Left to Give
I had to admit–Susie was a far better judge of people than Linda ever was.
She handed me a freshly peeled apple, and I said mockingly,
“Oh, probably just another depressive episode.”
I paused, then added with emphasis,“Severe depression.”
Susie burst out laughing.”Depression? Please. That’s full–blown schizophrenia. He should be in a psych ward. Only way he’s getting better is with the right diagnosis.”
I couldn’t help but snort.
Linda stared at me in disbelief.

She’d never imagined I could be so cold -actually laughing with someone else. about Henry’s so–called illness.
But what cut her the deepest… was seeing me joke and smile with another woman when I was always so distant and detached with her.
A sharp stab of jealousy twisted in her
gut.
She snapped,“That’s enough, Chase! What the hell happened to you? No wonder your parents are so disappointed in you. No wonder our daughter doesn’t even like you!
“You’re heartless! You were right–I do regret it. I regret not agreeing to the divorce sooner.
“I should’ve dumped you ages ago. Let everyone see what a piece of trash you really are!”

Henry, cradled in her arms, looked smug beneath the act, trying to sound noble.
“Linda, calm down… Don’t make
decisions just because of me!”
Linda shot back,
“No, Henry. Don’t stop me. I’m divorcing him not just because of you- but because I’m completely disgusted with him.”
I bit into my apple, unbothered.
Didn’t even blink.
Linda looked shocked, not understanding how I could stay so indifferent.
After all, just last year on my birthday, I’d locked myself in my room for a full day and night after my parents refused to come over.I got drunk. She couldn’t

stop me.Then she yelled at me—told me I deserved to be alone. That broke me. I spiraled for days, barely ate, until Tammy came over out of the blue and finally convinced me to eat something.
Since then, Linda never dared to throw those kinds of words at me again.
But today, she was furious. She wanted to provoke me. She thought she could still get a rise out of me.
What she didn’t expect… was that even those same words–the ones that used to destroy me–couldn’t stir a single reaction anymore.
Not even a twitch of my brow.
I was ice–cold, and it scared her.
With clenched teeth and trembling hands, she helped Henry out of the
room.

She whipped around instantly.“I knew you’d change your mind-”
I cut her off, deadpan. “Just making sure you don’t try to back out. See you at the civil affairs office tomorrow morning.”
Linda stiffened, jaw tight.“Don’t worry. I can’t wait to divorce you. I’ll be there.”
Once they were gone, I lay back and casually munched on the apple.
Susie watched me quietly, thinking I was trying to hold it in. She scratched her head, then awkwardly offered,“If you’re upset, it’s okay to cry, you know…
TV always says it helps to let it out.”
I chuckled.“Isn’t that usually the guy comforting the girl in those shows?”
Susie tilted her head.“So what? Men get

sad too. Men have the right to cry.”

Something stirred in my chest. I looked at her and teased,“You should stop being so nice to people. It’s easy to fall for someone like that.”
Her face turned bright red. She glared at me, flustered.”Are you teasing me?! If I’d known, I wouldn’t have bothered
cheering you up!”
I laughed out loud.“Alright, alright. I’ll stop. I am feeling lousy–but not because of the divorce. I haven’t kicked this damn fever yet.”
And my loving wife… hadn’t even noticed.
Susie blinked. “You’re really not upset?”
I shook my head.“Not at all. Honestly? It’s a relief.”
She didn’t say anything else.

I grabbed my phone and turned it on.
If we were getting divorced, then it was time to clear my name once and for all.
Henry, you want to walk all over me, claim my parents, my wife, their love— We’ll see if I let you.
