Chapter 2
Just then, his phone rang
Emma’s apologetic voice came through. “Leon, Noah overslept. Don’t rush out–spend more time with Julia.”
His expression softened as he said gently, “It’s fine. You two get some more sleep. Julia forgot to make the lunch boxes. Tell Noah I’ll buy something else to bring Don’t worry, I’m not blaming her.”
After hanging up, he walked straight to the nursery door and tried the handle, only to find it locked.
He turned back to me, gesturing for me to open it. “I need to get a toy for Noah. Since I couldn’t keep my promise to him, I should at least give him some compensation”
Last time Emma’s son visited, he had taken a liking to two comfort toys in the nursery.
I was reluctant to give them away, so he threw a tantrum, rolling on the floor and making a huge scene.
Leon came running and scolded me for being petty, snatching one of the toys from my hands for Noah to take home.
I had the nursery door fitted with a lock after that day.
Leon glanced at the wall clock and urged, “Hurry up, I need to leave. Emma and Noah haven’t had breakfast yet.
I remained motionless on the sofa. “I lost the key.”
My repeated non–cooperation finally made him lose his composure. “Julia, what’s the point of competing with a child? It’s just a toy. We can buy more when our baby is born.”
I told him calmly. “I’m not competing.”
“This is ridiculous.” Lean sneered. “How many times do I have to tell you before you’ll believe me there’s nothing between Emma and me! There’s a saying: a guilty conscience needs no accuser. You should reflect on yourself, I’m staying at the office for the next few days and won’t be coming home.”
He stormed out angrily.
From beginning to end, he never noticed the change in my abdomen
I went into the nursery and carefully packed away all the clothes and toys I had prepared for the baby, then took them somewhere remote and burned them!
I called someone to remove the crib and other furniture, and the once warm and cozy little room quickly became empty.
I locked the door and sent a text to a number: (Who has the best chance of winning a divorce case?]
The reply came quickly: (Me.]
Leon didn’t come home for several days.
One morning, I woke to find Leon sitting by my bed, watching me sleep.
He expected me to look pleased, but only got a bewildered stare.
I asked, “Why are you back?”

Leon pointed to an elegantly packaged breakfast bag on the nightstand. “I brought your favorite cream of mushroom made a special detour to get it.”
Icouldn’t recall ever liking cream of mushroom soup, but I didn’t care. I just said flatly, “I see. Leave it in the living room.”
When he didn’t see the gratitude he expected on my face, his eyes dimmed. “Are you still mad at me? You know Emma had a rough time with the wrong guy. She’s raising a child alone and has suffered a lot. I’m just lending her a helping hand–these are all small favors.”
His so–called “helping hand” meant getting Emuna a job as his personal secretary at Ironwood Pack’s company, fixing her light bulbs at

Seeing that I remained unmoved, Leon’s expression darkened and his tone became harsh. “Julia, you have a happy marriage and a beautiful family. Why dwell on these trivial matters? Can’t you be more generous and let her go, and let yourself go too? Stop focusing on Emma and put more attention on our soon–to–be–born pup.
As he spoke, his hand moved to cover my abdomen through the blanket, and his words stopped abruptly.
After a long moment, he spoke again, his voice carrying a hint of panic. “Where’s our baby?”
