“FUCK!” I practically scream. There’s no getting out of here. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it makes a lot of sense that the door would be difficult
to get through. I guess I was just… hopeful.
I hear a snicker come from the cell, and it only
infuriates me even more. I feel like such an idiot!
How could I have let myself get into a situation like
this?
I decide to take a moment and just take a deep breath. Of course, even that I can’t have.
“So that’s it then. There’s no getting out of here,” Jenny says from the cell.
“Nope. We are definitely stuck until somebody else comes tomorrow morning.” Unfortunately…
“Fantastic.” Her voice drips with sarcasm. “I love being fish in a barrel.”

being fish in a barrel.”
I pause for a moment to understand what she’s trying
to say.
“Wait a minute. Are you saying we’re in some kind of danger here?” I ask her. That comment was not
random.
“Oh, of course not. Power and cell phone coverage
randomly goes out at the same time in police
precincts all the time. Especially the ones with loose
ends to sever…”
I feel like my stomach falls into the depths of my
feet. I mean… I guess it makes sense. It could make
sense. Especially because I’m a particular threat
against the Baron, seeing as I’m the only police.

seems to be able to throw back.
“Let me ask you something,” Jenny breaks my train of thought. “How did you even get close to taking out the Baron anyway? Nobody’s ever been able to get that close.”
I glance her way, kind of sideways as I’m thinking

about something else.
“Why do you think that is?” I ask her.
“I don’t know.” She shrugs her shoulders.
“No. I mean why do you think he’s always so
untouchable?”
She stops to think for a moment.
“I mean, he’s got a ton of money.”
I nod my head. “Exactly. Now how do you fight a
guy with a ton of money?”
She seems to get irritated at the question. “Do you
think if I knew that I would’ve asked you?”
I ignore the sarcasm.
“let’s just say you fight fire with fire.”
She narrows her eyes and thought.

“So, you’re telling me that… the police department
also has a big budget to take him down?”
“No. I’m telling you that I do.”

That’s when I notice.
“Hold on. Are you okay?” I ask her. I she has what
appears to be blood on her back, staining through
her shirt.
“I’m fine.” She mumbles back.
“I…” Despite how much I dislike this woman, I can’t help but feel pity for her.
“It’s not clean in here. Let me clean you up…
She looks at me for a moment, kind of… surprised? What, does she think I’m a monster or something?
“Please.” I don’t even wait for her to finish. I go and
grab the med kit hanging on the wall.
“You’re going to have to lift your shirt,” I tell her. “I know it sounds bad. I promise though, I just want to
help.”
She kind of grunts. “I think you’ve helped enough.”
Still though, she acquiesces. I can see that she was
deciding if it was worth the risk or not.
She turns around, and backs herself toward me.

She turns around, and backs herself toward me.
“You better not cop a feel,” she warns me. “I don’t care how fucked I am now. I will rip your asshole out through your throat.”
I smile to myself.
She lifts up her shirt, revealing her naked back to me. And I see it. It’s a nasty gash near the top. Her whole back is dirty.
How did I not see this before? I was so blinded by
my triumph…
“Hold on,” I tell her. There is a basic lavatory sink in
here. I wet some gauze from the kit and begin to pass it along her back gently and cautiously.
“I’m not trying to ‘cop a feel,” I tell her. “You’re
pretty dirty back here…”
“Yeah, that’s what happens when you’re tackled
and dragged on the concrete by a fucking football
player.‘
I swallow. She’s not wrong. Now that her back is
clean, it’s time to clean the wound, which seems to

have some dirt in it. Despite how tense she was. I
notice that she seems to have relaxed a bit. For some
reason, it makes me feel good.
The feel of her skin on my hand is somehow…
cathartic. I realize how long it’s been since I’ve even
felt the touch of a woman. I’ve been so focused on
taking down the Baron that…
“Ow!” Jenny grunts.
“I’m sorry. I have to get the dirt out of here. Almost
done…”
“Anddd there. Just gotta disinfect it now… slight
sting…” I say as I spray the liquid onto the cut.
I feel her muscles tense, and hear the sharp intake of
air. It obviously hurt.
“I, uh…I may have been a little overzealous in the
arrest,” I admit to her as I finish bandaging up the
wound.
Why would you say that? Why would you tell her
that?
She doesn’t say anything, but once again, she seems
to relax.

“Were you just talking out of your ass before? Or do you think there’s more to this power outage than just a bad transformer?” I can’t help but ask.
“It makes sense.” That’s all she says.
The worst thing is, I can’t really disagree. It does make sense. And there’s nothing I can do about it.
