- Chapter
X
“Shit, get back!”
Jenny’s words ring out just instants before the
bullets come flying toward us.
I can tell that we were both barely able to get out of
the way in time.
“Oh officer! It appears that you’re still alive. I’ll
tell you what. You hand over that little bitch, and
we’ll call it even, okay? No hard feelings? It’s just
business, after all.”
“He’s setting us up,” I say quietly. “We have to
move.
And it’s a good idea we do, because I can hear the
raging–sound of a grenade explode where we just
were as much as I can feel the shockwave through
the walls.
Jenny is about to fire off a few rounds, but I put my
Jenny is about to fire off a few rounds, but I put my finger to my lips.
“He doesn’t know that we have guns,” I tell her.
Her eyes widen in understanding, and then a most
beautiful smile creeps onto her beautiful features.
“Oh officer!!!” Princess calls out again. We are
both watching through a doorway, waiting to see if
someone comes to check it out.
And luckily, they do. I don’t know which of us
fires first, but needless to say, there is a lot of blood
on the wall behind where the intruder had been
standing but a moment ago.
Damn, she’s a sniper with that thing…
I don’t think Jenny missed a single shot.
We both come running out of the doorway, and fire
off a few volleys down toward where the interloper
had come from.
There is a brief moment of silence.
“Now that’s not fair, officer.”
“Sorry to disappoint,” I snarl back. I signal for Jenny
Sorry to disappoint. I snarl back. I signal for Jenny to begin a flanking manoeuvre. She nods her head
and quietly begins her journey.
Of course, Princess is right between us and the
chief’s office.
He knows as well.
Of course he knows. How else would he know that
this place was going to be empty tonight? That Jenny
was there?
There’s a mole. There’s just no other explanation.
I duck back as an explosion blasts off the wall from at
few rifle rounds.
These guys aren’t packing toys. Those are some
powerful guns that they’re using, but… that actually
gives us an advantage.
This is close combat, and rifles are bigger and
heavier. Not awesome when you don’t have a lot of
space to manoeuvre.
I run across the hallway to another room, and there’s
another immediate explosion on the floor in the
hallway.
103 PM
hallway.
I peak around the corner again, and fire off some
buckshot their way.
“Fuck!” someone screams out. I smile elatedly,
trying to get a peak of where the sound came from.
“He shot my fucking foot, Prins!”
There is a brief pause.
“Well, Jimmy, this was supposed to be a no–names. affair. I guess now we’re just going to have to kill them.” Princess chuckles loudly at his own joke.
This guy is even more looney than I remember. He’s perfect for the criminals of the city; happy to murder, and crazy enough to do it for a living.
“You know we should really stop this before someone gets hurt,” I call out.
My only response is a flurry of gunfire coming my
way. I take it as a sign.
Suddenly, I hear the telltale sign of the
sub–machineguns that we keep in our armory,
followed by the pained screams which sound like
Suo–machineguns that we keep in our armory,
followed by the pained screams which sound like
they came from the same person I had hit with the
shotgun.
It seems like Jenny bagged a buck.
I hear Princess growl as he begins to realize the
situation that he’s in.
“You okay over there, Princess?” I call out.
“You know, one day you’re really going to regret calling me that. Nobody calls me that. NOBODY
CALLS ME THAT!”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it before, Princess. Now can
you please, like, either die or go away already?”
Once again, Prins fires my way. That one was close, too. I barely manage to duck out of the way as his
bullets blast the walls around me.
Chunks of brick and mortar are flying as the bullets
impact the walls and the concrete floor. Then I hear the obvious click click of an empty clip.
Now I make my move. I fly from my position, not
even giving him a chance to make a decision, and
even giving him a chance to make a decision, and
run toward him as quickly as I can. I know he’s a tricky bugger, so I duck into another doorway just as he fires off a couple of rounds from his pistol.
I hear him giggle happily. We’re so close now. I fire off a shotgun round into the room where he is, blasting the wall where I know he’s hiding. He’s hiding behind a doorway. I fire off a few rounds right into the bricks, all into the same spot.
I think he must know what I’m trying to do, but… I don’t know if he really has anywhere to go…or anything to do about it.
He tries to make a move, and Jenny fires off her
SMG. The mini explosions push him back into
position, and with one final shot of my shotty, I hear the pained scream come from his location.
I don’t even have a chance to run forward when I see
Jenny run through, and smash her SMG downward. There is a sickening thud sound as her weapon
makes contact with his skull, and then… it’s over.
“Jesus, remind me never to get on your bad side…” I
mumble as we both move into the chief’s office.

mumble as we both move into the chief’s office.
It’s clear, so I close the door behind us, pushing the bolt into place. It’s a reinforced door for a reinforced room. We’re safe in here.
“Max… you’re bleeding!”
Jenny rushes over to me, and I look down to see
what she’s talking about.
“Oh, shit…”
My shirt is covered in blood. I don’t feel anything, but….
Oh, nope. There it is. She rushes over, and practically rips my shirt off.
“You know, you didn’t have to stage an assault on a police station to get me out of my clothes…”
For a moment, she looks like she wants throttle me. It’s that same look from before, when she was still in her cell. I’m happy that she changes her mind.
