Chapter 16
Sebastian placed his phone face-down on the passenger seat, his expression extremely grim.
Five minutes ago, he had just hung up on the private investigator, who said they had spotted Elizabeth on airport surveillance but completely lost track of her afterwards.
Due to weather conditions, numerous flights had been canceled, so they couldn’t determine where Elizabeth had gone.
The watch hands jumped to seven o’clock, and Clarissa’s call came in. He stared at the screen for two seconds before finally pressing answer.
“Sebastian, what are you doing?”
Clarissa’s voice was sickeningly sweet. “I found a new French restaurant that just opened. Should we go try it?”
Sebastian turned the steering wheel and drove out of the underground garage: “Send me the address, I’ll pick you up.”
In the rearview mirror, he saw the heavy dark circles under his eyes. Ever since discovering Elizabeth had disappeared, he hadn’t had a good night’s sleep.
On the road, Clarissa talked about her favorite foods as usual, but Sebastian was uncharacteristically only responding with occasional “mm” sounds.
Even after the car stopped at the restaurant entrance, he kept frequently checking his phone, hoping the detective would send new information.
“Sir, this is our new product, specially made with imported cream. Would you like to try it?”
The waiter recommended with a beaming smile.
Sebastian nodded expressionlessly: “Fine.”
Clarissa’s eyes instantly lit up, her fingertips unconsciously stroking the edge of the table.
She suddenly imagined whether there might be a special surprise hidden inside when the cake was cut open, like a ring perhaps.
But when the cake was brought over and Clarissa picked up the knife to cut it, the smile on her face immediately froze.
There was nothing inside the cake.
“Sebastian, are you forgetting something?”
She poked at the cream on the cake, her tone carrying coquettish complaint.
Sebastian was looking down at messages on his phone and replied casually: “What?”
Clarissa’s expression completely darkened. She simply stopped talking, and dinner ended awkwardly in silence.
On the return trip, she sulked in silence, staring out at the night scenery.
Suddenly, Sebastian’s phone vibrated frantically in his pocket.
Thinking the detective had found Elizabeth’s whereabouts, he slammed on the brakes.
The tires screeched against the pavement, and car horns immediately blared from behind.
“Sebastian! Are you crazy?” Clarissa’s face went pale, the seatbelt cutting painfully into her chest.
But Sebastian couldn’t be bothered to comfort her, answering the phone with trembling hands: “Did you find her? Where is she?”
A strange voice came through the phone: “Hello, this is bank customer service. Your credit card just had an unusual transaction…”
Sebastian’s hand gripping the phone showed bulging veins. Clarissa looked at him in disbelief: “So you nearly killed us just to answer that kind of call?” “I’m waiting for a very important call.”
Chapter 16
Sebastian restarted the car, his voice cold as ice.
Clarissa’s eyes immediately reddened, and she bit her lip, saying nothing more.
Night wind poured through the half-open window, carrying a chill. The atmosphere in the car was more oppressive than ever.
Sebastian looked at the blurred traffic lights ahead, with only one thought in mind: to find Elizabeth as soon as possible.
