He stared at me in shock, his voice shaky. “When did this happen?”
Jenna thought I was having another argument with Brandon and rushed over to intervene. She plastered on a fake sweet smile and said, “Alright, alright, Brandon, don’t be harsh on Sylvia. It’s my birthday, let’s all be happy. Sylvia, let me cut you a piece of cake!”
I stepped back to keep my distance and replied coolly, “No thanks. I came tonight because Brandon promised to grant me a wish if I showed up.”
I pulled out the divorce papers and tossed them at Brandon’s face. “Sign this. That’s my wish.”
He ripped the papers to shreds, disbelief etched across his face. “Don’t joke around, Sylvía. You think I’ll believe you’re pregnant just because of some paper from a maternity hospital?”
I corrected him, “Not pregnant—miscarried.”
He raised his voice, clearly rattled. “Why? Because I’ve been busy taking care of Jen? You’re jealous, so you terminated our baby?”
I scoffed. “I was planning to terminate the pregnancy, but before I even made it to the hospital, I lost the baby.”
He froze. “What do you mean?”
Seeing the scorn in my eyes, he suddenly remembered the day he nearly hit me with his car, as if a bolt of lightning had struck him. “No way! I—I definitely hit the brakes! I didn’t hit you! Come on, let’s go to the hospital. The baby must be fine!” He grabbed my hand, desperation etched on his face as he tried to pull me out.
Suddenly, Jenna clutched her stomach and squatted down. “Brandon, my stomach really hurts.” Her lips trembled as if she were enduring intense pain.
But instead of rushing to her side like he usually would, he turned to her with an unusually stern expression and shouted, “What does your stomachache have to do with me? It’s not like I got you pregnant! You keep bothering me—are you out of
your mind?”
Jenna stood frozen, disbelief on her face, completely forgetting to pretend her belly hurt.
I pulled my hand away from Brandon and threw the abortion paperwork at him. “Look closely. The baby is gone.”
He snatched the paper, took a quick glance, and immediately looked away, his voice shaky. “When did you have the procedure?”
I scoffed, loud enough for everyone to hear. “The night you brought Jenna home!”
Jenna’s boyfriend jumped off the couch and slapped her hard. “I told you to make money, not to cheat on me!”
Jenna’s cheek swelled as she covered her face, tears streaming down. “I didn’t! I only stayed the night. We didn’t do anything else, I swear!”
He didn’t buy it and kept cursing, hitting her a few more times. “Stop lying! I knew

Jenna’s friends were frozen in shock, too scared to step in.
At her breaking point, Jenna shot back, “Yeah, I did sleep with him! So what? You treat me like garbage, why shouldn’t I find a man who treats me right? I’ll tell you this: Brandon is a thousand times better than you!”
Jennal Shut up!” Brandon snapped, then turned to me, worry etched on his face. “Sylvia, don’t listen to her? The night you didn’t come home, I was frustrated. I didn’t want to reach out to you. When Jenna called me late, I just wanted to get back to you. In a moment of weakness, I brought her home. I was going to have her sleep in the guest room, but she came into my room in the middle of the night!”
“Enough,” I interrupted, my patience wearing thin as I looked at him with disdain. “Brandon, you’re not a real man. I can’t respect you.”
