Chapter 4
“Jackson, she broke the keepsake my mom left me, and you want me to apologize to her? Why?”
“Because I’m your boyfriend! You bullied your sister–I’m teaching you
how to behave!”
Carl chimed in, too, “Exactly. It’s just a lousy bracelet. Look how scared you made my baby–she’s crying! You should apologize!
“You upset my daughter, so that 30% stake is now her compensation for emotional damage. You’re not getting it anymore!”
Marsha slapped me across the face. “Ignorant country bumpkin–you’ve never seen the world. You’re making my daughter cry over a silly ‘bracelet! If you don’t apologize, I’ll beat you to death! Don’t think we can’t live without you–I’ll just find another girl to pretend to be a daughter and marry her off to that idiot Bradley!”
I clenched the broken bracelet in my hand, letting the blood drip freely from my palm.
“You’re all ganging up to bully me? Fine!
“Carl, don’t regret this! Even if the Sullivan family comes begging at
my door, I won’t give you a single meal!”
With that, I turned and ran out of Sullivan’s residence.
Jackson chased after me.
Chapter
He grabbed me just as I was about to get into my car.
“Monica, is your hand okay?”
I shook him off hard and looked him
in the eye coldly.
“Now you want to play the caring good guy? Too late.”
“Let me explain. You saw it too–Rosella was crying so hard, and it’s her birthday today. We just wanted to smooth things over quickly.”
I let out a short laugh. “Jackson, save your act. If you really cared about me, you would’ve said something when you found out I was marrying that idiot, Bradley. But you didn’t say a word. So what are you pretending for?”
“Monica, honestly, I’m hurting too. I’ve thought it through–even if you marry him, we can still be together in secret.”
I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “Because it’s hard to find another woman who looks like Rosella, right? So even though I’m marrying someone else, you still won’t let go? Jackson, you’re worse than a
monster.”
With that, I got into the car and sped off.
As for that 30% stake, I didn’t bother fighting Carl for it, because I knew someone as stingy as him would just find another excuse not to give it back anyway.
Seven days later, I registered my marriage with the second son of the Bradley family, Shawn Bradley.
Due to his physical condition, the Bradley family didn’t hold a wedding. They just had a meal with the Sullivan family.
–
Throughout the meal, Shawn, sitting next to me, was all over the place. -spilling water on my head one moment, throwing shrimp shells at my
face the next.
I endured everything with a blank expression.
Just as the meal was about to end, he dumped an entire bottle of sauce on my dress.
I stood up and went to the restroom to clean up.
As soon as I finished and turned around, I saw that Shawn had followed me.
He grinned foolishly at me. “You have such long legs. Are you fast at running?”
I patiently straightened his collar. “You want to play tag? Alright, next time let’s find a wide–open place—I’ll run, and you can chase me.”
“No, no! You run–I’m not chasing you. I’m not an idiot. Hahaha!”
A flash of inspiration suddenly crossed my mind. I took his hand and walked back with him.
Right then, we ran into Carl and the others coming out of the private
room.
I pulled Shawn forward and laced my fingers tightly with his.
With a smile on my face, I looked at Carl and said, “Remember what I told you? Don’t come begging at my door.”
Then I tiptoed and gave Shawn a kiss on the check.
