Chapter 8
When I stepped outside with Rachel on my back, Theodore was still asleep by the door.
He was holding a roll of our wedding photos.
I found it funny. He never loved me. Yet now that I was gone, he acted like he cared.
I didn’t want this kind of belated love.
Quietly, I kept myself hidden and stayed alert the entire time.
But with half a day’s journey left to reach my village, I ran into Theodore
once more.
I didn’t know how he managed to track me.
No one came from the southwest, yet the fog was thick with snakes and
insects.
Theodore trembled as he bit his purplish lips and followed behind me.
“No strangers are allowed in my village.”
He clenched his teeth and said, “Legally, I’m your husband.”
For seven years, he had refused to admit that, but now he said it openly.
I subconsciously felt nauseous.
I warned him again, “You’ve been bitten by a snake. If you keep moving, the poison will reach your heart.”

With my head bowed and Rachel on my back, Theodore kept following stubbornly.
The mountain paths were tricky. As a spoiled heir who would complain about climbing a hill in Los Angeles, he stayed silent the whole way.
Only when we reached my village did his legs give out, and he collapsed hard onto his knees.
The venom was taking hold. Sweat dripped down his forehead as his body trembled in pain.
The villagers ignored outsiders, so no one would step in even if Theodore
died outside.
In desperation, he crawled forward and grabbed my pant leg..
“Hannah, will you truly leave me here alone?”
Honestly, I thought about leaving him behind. But when I looked back, Rachel’s eyes were closed behind me.
With her gentle heart, she wouldn’t let someone die right outside the village.
When I returned and carried Theodore back to the village, he had already lost consciousness.
I didn’t know what he dreamed of. When I helped him up, he clutched my waist and mumbled something.
“Hannah, can you forgive me for this once?
“You can punish me however you want. Just don’t leave me…”
People who didn’t know how Theodore treated me might think he loved me deeply.

But because I knew him well, I knew his sweet words couldn’t be trusted.
I woke Theodore up by pouring salt water on him.
He was leaning against dry straw under a shed, his eyes dazed.
He was surprised when he saw me.
“Hannah, you care about me, don’t you? You couldn’t just let me die.”
Tears filled his eyes, like a stray dog rescued from the mud.
Sadly, I didn’t follow through with the thought of taking him in.
“If someone dies here, the police will get involved. I’ll give you three days to recover and leave the village.
“If not, I’ll come back and make you leave.”
Theodore’s love was blocked, and he stared at me blankly.
“You used to be so good and obedient. But that was all fake, right?
“Why won’t you forgive me after everything I did?”
I stopped, turned, and laughed cruelly. Even if it hurt, I still stood straight.
“That’s right. For seven years, I acted like a good wife to repay you and keep peace.
“But you’re pathetic for loving someone who never loved you.”
Theodore’s face paled, despair filling his eyes.
He slammed his fist on the hay beside him and clenched his teeth.

“Yeah, I’m pathetic.
“Even after reading Rachel’s suicide note, I followed you without fear of
death.
“I know who you are, but I still wanted to be close to you.
“Hannah, please have mercy and say something kind.”
His tears fell onto the hay. He sobbed so hard he couldn’t finish his words.
I shrugged, as indifferent as he had been when he ignored me in front of the security camera.
“Theodore, if you can’t handle it, just leave.”
I turned away, not willing to look at him again.
