Chapter 6
Before going abroad, River’s mother called asking me to come to his grandfather’s birthday party.
Mrs. Kingsley said, “Willa, just because you won’t be my daughter–in–law doesn’t mean we have to never see each other again, right?”
Mrs. Kingsley had always been good to me. Better than my own mom.
So I had no reason to refuse her.
Besides, my parents weren’t home. Our family had to send someone as a representative.
So I picked out some gifts and headed to the Kingsley house.
River opened the door, looking like he wanted to say something.
Facing him, I still felt flustered. I looked down and said quietly, “Excuse me.”
River didn’t move.
I just squeezed past him and walked in.
Serena came out, acting like the lady of the house. “Willa’s here! You didn’t need to bring gifts!”
I didn’t want to respond to her. I grabbed the gifts back before she could take them.
Serena suddenly whined to River, “River, you still haven’t made up with her?”
Before River could answer, I turned around. “I don’t need anyone to make up with me, and I’m not mad. I’m acting like this because I simply don’t. want to hand over my gift for Grandpa Kingsley to some outsider.”
Serena laughed. “And you say you’re not mad? You’re literally calling me an outsider now. River, your little girlfriend is hilarious.”
River’s face went dark. “Willa, do you know what you’re saying? Apologize!”

Serena waved her hand. “Forget it, River. Why make such a big deal out of it? I’m not a child–I don’t get upset over every little thing.”
I couldn’t help but yell at River, “You know damn well whether you think of her as a sister–in–law or a girlfriend!”
As soon as I said it, the entire Kingsley family came out.
River’s face went bright red. For once, this usually composed guy looked completely flustered.
His first instinct was to explain to Serena, “Don’t listen to her bullshit!”
Serena looked hurt too. “Willa, River and I are just family. How could you think that? If this gets out, how can I face anyone?”
“Willa, apologize!” River said through gritted teeth.
“What? Am I wrong?”
River grabbed my wrist. “Don’t think just because my parents like you, you can do whatever you want.”
Mrs. Kingsley quickly came over to separate us.
After glaring at River, she said gently to me, “Willa, let’s eat first. We can talk about this after dinner.”
My tears started flowing again. “Mrs. Kingsley, I won’t stay for dinner. River and I already called off our engagement anyway, so we don’t have any
“What did you say?” River suddenly cut off grabbed my hand. “Called off the engagement? Who said you could?”
I smiled bitterly. “If we broke up, shouldn’t we call off the engagement?”
River asked, “Are you serious?”
“Yeah.”
“Willa. you’re saying this in front of my entire family. You better not regret it.”
I glanced at Serena, then looked back at him. “Don’t worry. No one’s gonna bother you two anymore.“
