The next day, Thomas took me to a bar, saying he wanted to reintroduce me to one of his friends.
As soon as I stepped into the private room, I saw Gerard making out with a woman.
Thomas gave a polite cough to interrupt.
Gerard looked up, stunned for a moment, then slowly stood and said, “Hi, I’m Gerard’s childhood friend, Thomas.”
He reached out to shake my hand. “This is my girlfriend, Claudia.”
“Oh.” I nodded but did not take his hand.
Claudia Gould–I knew exactly who she was.
Gerard’s first love.
They broke up because of family pressure, but ever since I started losing my memory, they had been secretly seeing each other.
The real reason Gerard had not come back to me in three years was her.
The room was full of Gerard’s friends, many of whom had once played the role of my “husband.” Now they all laughed and joked like everything was normal.
“Leonie, lost your memory again? Gerard is such a great guy. No matter how many times you forget, he always stays by your side!”
“Yeah, Leonie, you should treasure a man like that!”
I smirked but did not say anything.
Thomas pulled me to sit beside him on the couch.
As soon as we sat down, I picked up a piece of fruit and fed it to him. “Honey, eat some more.”
In the dim light, I saw Gerard glance our way.
I leaned close to Thomas’s ear and gently bit his earlobe. “Honey, you were too rough last night. I’m still sore.”
Thomas froze, gripping my hand awkwardly. “Babe, stop messing around.”
Gerard clutched his wine glass tightly, his expression darkening.
Claudia, who was sitting next to him, teased, “Leonie, you’re something else. The famous cold and distant hunk has been completely wrapped around your little finger like a guy falling in love for the first time.”

Her words made Gerard’s friends nervous. They laughed stiffly, trying to smooth things over.
“It proves Leonie and Gerard are made for each other!”
“Yeah, even memory loss can’t break their bond!”
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Gerard take a sip of wine, his face black as coal.
A wave of satisfaction ran through me. Then, I got up and headed for the bathroom.
When I came out of the bathroom, Claudia walked straight toward me.
Just as we passed each other, she suddenly splashed a full glass of red wine all over me.
“Oops, I’m so sorry. My hand slipped,” she said.
Smack!
I raised my hand and slapped her hard across the face.
“Sorry,” I smiled coldly. “My hand slipped, too.”
Right after I said it, an angry voice barked from behind me. “Leonie Granet, what are you doing?”
Gerard rushed over.

Claudia threw herself into his arms like she was some poor victim, tears falling fast. “Babe, I just spilled wine on Leonie by accident, and she slapped me. My head’s spinning now…”
Gerard’s face darkened as he said, “Apologize to Claudia!”
I sneered, “Who even are you to be ordering me around?”
“Leonie!” Gerard’s eyes were cold, and his face was terrifyingly grim. “You’ve become so arrogant and out of control after losing your memory!”
“What I become is none of your business.”
I could not even be bothered to argue with him anymore.
Just as I turned to leave, he suddenly kicked me in the knee. Thud! I dropped down on one knee.
“Leonie, don’t think you can act however you want just because you’ve lost your memory. Apologize to Claudia, now!”
Looking at the fuming man in front of me, I just felt sad and pathetic for him.
I had no parents, and in this huge city, Gerard was all I had.
We fell in love in college and had been together for ten years since.
When he proposed, he swore he would protect me, love me forever, and never betray me.

Now, not only had he broken those promises, but he even laid a hand on me for another woman.
All those sweet words were just a joke.
Just then, Thomas’s cold voice rang out behind me, “Don’t touch her.”
Even though my knee throbbed in pain, I stood up, slapped Gerard across the face, then ran into Thomas’s arms. “Honey, your friend is so mean! He bullied me!” I said, pouting.
Thomas looked down at me, clearly worried. Then, his eyes darkened as he stared Gerard down. “Don’t bully Leonie.”
Gerard clenched his jaw, his face full of barely contained anger.
Claudia clung to Gerard and mocked, “A used toy and a backup plan–what’s there to be proud of?”
“Shut up!”
Both Gerard and Thomas snapped at the same time.
