Chapter 7
James gave a bitter smile as he asked, “Do you hate me that much?”
“Let’s go to that café. I still have half an hour left on my lunch break.”
I didn’t answer him but started walking ahead.
“One Americano, one latte with almond milk, please.”
“No, two Americanos.”
I turned slightly to James and smiled.
“People’s tastes change.”
He froze for a moment, then clenched and quickly released his fist.
“Bianca, I’ve thought it through. I’ve decided to be honest with you.”
“Yes, I liked Wendy, but that was only back in high school. After she married my brother, I stopped having those feelings. Later, I met you again and we got married. I really wanted to spend my life with you. But during the car accident, I don’t know why I chose to save her first…”

“So even I started to think maybe I still had feelings for her.”
His voice began to shake and his eyes quickly turned red.
“But during the time you were away from home, I realized the person I cared about most was you. Whether I was eating, sleeping, or heading to work, your face appeared in my mind. I missed your embrace, the way you looked at me. I wanted you by my side all the
time.”
His voice cracked.
“Bianca, I promise I’ll keep my distance from Wendy from now on. If you want, we can even move somewhere else and live alone. Just don’t leave me, okay?”
I looked into his eyes, but I didn’t feel anything.
His words sounded gentle and emotional, but to me, they didn’t feel real.
“But your concern for Wendy after we got married was also real.”
“We were together for five years. Except for work, we spent nearly all our time together. It’s normal for you to get used to me.”
“No, it’s not just a habit-”
“Let me finish.”
I stopped James’s urgent response and looked at him calmly.
“After so many years together, I don’t doubt you had feelings for me. You were good to me and I won’t deny that. But that’s exactly why I couldn’t accept what happened after the car accident.”
“I want a relationship that is true and pure. I want two people who only have each other in their hearts. But clearly, you still have Wendy in yours.”

Under the soft light, James’s eyes glowed faintly. They were still beautiful. But sadly, I would never fall for them again.
“During our time in the hospital, everything between us was painful. We fought constantly. You couldn’t understand how I felt. You kept defending Wendy right in front of me. That made me decide to get a divorce.”
“James,”
I gently placed my hand on my lower abdomen.
“There was once a child here, our child, about to be born. But you gave him up. After he was gone, you tried to move on with just a few simple words. How could I accept that?”
“Back then, every time I closed my eyes, I saw you running away, leaving me behind. It felt like someone was tearing my heart out.”
“Bianca, I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.”
James lowered his head. His shoulders trembled slightly. It was the first time he looked so weak.
“It’s my fault. I let you down. But I promise you, I’ll never do that again. Just give me one more chance, please?”
