Chapter 9 Having Dinner Together
Eva took a cab back home, took a hot shower, and curled up on the couch.
Even though she was married, she had always lived with her grandfather. Now that he was gone, as she looked at the empty living room, a deep sense of loneliness washed over her.
She had once debated whether to sell the house.[]
But her grandfather had never wanted her to sell it. When he was at his lowest point, he had said that if things ever got too difficult, he would rather give up the company than let his precious granddaughter be left with nowhere to go.[]
The company was his life’s work, but his time was short. Though he regretted it, he wouldn’t live to see the end. But he needed to protect Eva first. Otherwise, when he passed, how would she survive on her own? At least, he wanted to leave her a place where she could find some stability.[]
Eva sat on the couch for a long while, before finally getting up to take out the property deed.[]
Her name was on it. Her grandfather had given her everything–his life, his love–but he would never see her happy.
Sometimes, Eva wondered if her happiness mattered at all, but the worry and regret that her grandfather couldn’t see was more painful than her own unhappiness.
The next day, Eva went to find Sean again.[]
But she was careful. When she arrived at the company building, she called first.[]
Even though they were still married, they weren’t that familiar anymore. Especially at this point, she didn’t want to do anything that would make her seem intrusive, or it might make it even harder for Sean to sign the divorce papers.
She dialed his number. It rang, but it wasn’t answered; instead, Sean quickly hung up.
Since he had hung up, it was clear that he didn’t want to take her call at this time. Eva wisely didn’t call again. Instead, she just sent him a text saying she was downstairs, waiting to meet him.[]
When Sean came down after his meeting, he immediately spotted Eva.]
She was sitting on the steps outside his company, with a notebook under her to sit on, typing away on her phone.
Hearing the noise, Eva looked up from the screen, her eyes meeting Sean’s who had already walked up to her.[]
“You’re looking for me?” Sean asked, looking down at her from above.
“Yes,” Eva nodded, standing up but then hesitating and not actually rising. She smiled, “Just wait a moment.”
Sean laughed, slightly bending down and offering his arm to her.
Seeing his arm extend, Eva subconsciously swallowed, her heart racing slightly, but she quickly composed herself and took his arm, using it to stand up.
She had been sitting for too long, and her legs had gone numb
Thank you…” Once standing straight, Eva withdrew her hand, thanking him appropriately.

Sean nodded, then glanced at the notebook she had been sitting
Before Eva could say anything, Sean bent down, picked up the notebook, and flipped it open.[]
“You’re doing well for yourself. This house isn’t cheap….” Sean looked at her, surprised that she had used the property deed as a
cushion. He glanced at it, then closed it and handed it back Eva.
Eva quietly took it, offering a bitter smile.[]
Sean finally realized she had intentionally brought the property deed

As they walked toward the restaurant, Sean turned his head and looked at her several times, but Eva didn’t say a word on the way.
