Chapter 6
Shortly after returning to the dorm, Sarah stormed through the door with Jessica trailing behind her.
“Ashley, why are you always giving me a hard time?”
“I could ask you the same question.”
I admired my fresh manicure, not bothering to look up at her.

“My boyfriend came to pick me up after class, and you had to butt in and call me a player. Who started this mess?”
Sarah was so angry she could barely speak.
“I just saw you flirting with that upperclassman from before, so I gave you some friendly advice. Don’t go around being promiscuous and ruin our dorm’s reputation!”
“Oh really? I know you like Brady. Want me to give you his WhatsApp?”
I looked at Sarah with a sweet smile, deliberately dodging her point.
Sarah felt like she was punching cotton. Frustrated, she spun around twice before plopping down in her chair and launching into a tirade.

“Who likes your boyfriend? How full of yourself can you get? That Brady looks like a broke loser, and he’s not even tall. I wouldn’t give a guy like that a second glance.”
“Only someone blind like you would fall for him. Don’t think I want to steal your man. Go ahead and treasure your precious Brady.”
Sarah spent ten minutes tearing Brady apart, criticizing everything from his height and looks to his character.
She thought this would infuriate me, but she didn’t notice Jessica’s face growing darker by the minute.
“Enough!”
Jessica suddenly shouted.
Sarah was stunned. “I’m insulting her boyfriend. Why are you getting worked up?”
“Do you even know Brady? Why are you talking about him behind his back like this?”
Jessica’s voice trembled, and her eyes were red with tears.
Seeing Jessica’s reaction, Sarah suddenly understood. She sneered with disdain:
“Don’t tell me you like that Brady guy?”

“Well, I guess that makes sense. Coming from some small county town, you probably haven’t seen many quality guys.”
“Jessica, your foundation isn’t great, but with some makeup and styling, maybe some plastic surgery when you have money, you could still land a rich guy. Why waste your energy on someone like him?”
Sarah spoke earnestly, thinking she was looking out for Jessica, but her words dripped with superiority.
Tears welled up in Jessica’s eyes as she stood up and shoved Sarah hard.
“Who do you think you are? What gives you the right to look down on us like this?”
“All you do is hang around with those rich boys in class, letting them buy you coffee and gifts. What’s so special about that?”
Sarah was caught off guard by the push. She never expected the usually meek and compliant Jessica to turn on her over some
guy.
Never one to back down from a fight, Sarah immediately got up to retaliate, and the two began wrestling.
Just as both their faces were getting scratched up and the dorm supervisor was bound to show up, I stepped in to separate them.

“Take a step back and the world opens up. We’re all roommates here–let’s not hurt our friendship.”
This was Jessica’s favorite saying in my past life, and now I was throwing it right back at her, word for word.
She glared at me fiercely before storming out in tears.
I let out a theatrical sigh of regret.
It felt so good to be the one standing on the sidelines for once.
When Michelle returned from her activity, she found only chaos on the floor.
She asked in surprise, “What happened here?”
I shrugged. “A fight over some cheating guy.”
