Chapter 2
Kael returned in a tired hurry, a bouquet clutched in his hands.
He walked toward me without a trace of guilt or remorse on his face.
“Nevara, I brought you your favorite–lisianthus.”
Lisianthus. The flower that symbolized faithful, undivided love. In Kael’s hands, it now felt like a cruel joke.
I took the bouquet, and Kael, thinking I’d calmed down, finally began to explain.
“Caela has bone cancer. Her only wish before she dies is to become my Luna. We grew up together, Nevara. I couldn’t let her leave this
world with regrets. I’ll be getting engaged to her in three days.”
“You’ve always been so understanding. I know you’ll get it, won’t you?”
His tone didn’t sound like an explanation–it sounded like a declaration.
Getting engaged to Caela in three days?
What a coincidence. In three days, I’d be gone too.
I stayed silent and gave a small nod.
Kael had always hated my prideful temper. He used to say I’d run to him for attention every time something went wrong, constantly asking whether he still loved me.
Eventually, I learned to stop. I learned to be patient.
Now, I didn’t argue or cry. I didn’t even ask if he still loved me. Kael seemed surprised. He gave me a sideways glance.
“I’m moving out tomorrow to live with Caela. For the next few months, you’ll have to manage on your own.
“She’s sick, Nevara. She needs me more than you do right now.”
I smiled faintly and set the flowers down. When he saw that I wasn’t arguing, he leaned in, trying to touch my face.
I turned away before he could.
There was a bright lipstick stain on his shirt collar. That sickly–sweet Omega scent clung to him, so strong it made me nauseous.
Kael’s mood soured at my rejection. Without another word, he left the house
I tossed both the flowers and the birthday cake into the trash, then began to pack my things.
I didn’t want the flowers. I didn’t want Kael. And I no longer had any attachment to this pack house, even after six years of living here.
The next day, I appeared at the Elder Hall and submitted my application to leave Nightveil Pack
Kael and I had met at a banquet and fallen in love. Later, when he became Alpha of Nightveil, I followed him here, rejected the marriage alliance my parents had arranged, and stood by him while he clawed his way to power,
Back then, I had gently hinted that maybe we should hold a Mating Ceremony.
But Kael was always “too busy.”
He said he hadn’t built enough of a career yet, and he couldn’t give me the status and security a Luna deserved.
I didn’t want to burden him, so I quietly persuaded my parents not to interfere. I didn’t even reveal that I was the daughter of Argent Crest Pack’s Alpha–afraid that knowing might put more pressure on him.
When I found that ring in his coat pocket, I had dared to hope. I thought he had finally made up his mind to propose. But in the end, it had all just been wishful thinking.

A she–wolf walked by and caught sight of the resignation document in my hands. Her eyes widened in surprise.
“Nevara, aren’t you about to become Luna? Why are you leaving the pack out of nowhere?”
I smiled politely. “I’m about to hold my own Mating Ceremony. I might be transferring to another pack soon.
Tessa smiled and congratulated me. “Seriously, how did everyone in our pack suddenly find their mates? Kael just posted about getting engaged to his mate last night too!”
“I have to say, Kael and his mate are a perfect match. I heard they’ve known each other since childhood. First loves, too.
My smile froze. I opened Kael’s chat, only to find he had blocked me on both his personal and work accounts.
”
His main account, the one he used for private messages, had unfriended and deleted me right after he left last night. The work account only had a few dry, formal exchanges left–nothing more than coworkers now.
Just then, Kael walked into the Elder Hall with Caela by his side.
They stood close together. Caela’s cheeks were flushed with health, and her smile was radiant–not at all like someone suffering from a terminal illness.
Kael addressed the room, “This is Nightveil Pack’s future Luna. I hope everyone will treat her well and live in harmony.”
Tessa’s expression shifted. Her gaze flicked back and forth between Caela and me. Still, she gave Caela a polite bow.
“Luna, it’s a pleasure to meet you.
”
I said nothing, quietly tightening my grip on the papers in my hand.
Kael turned to me with a look of disapproval.
“Nevara, everyone else has greeted the new Luna. What’s your problem?”
Caela gave a soft laugh and held out her hand.
“Looks like we’ll be in the same pack now. I hope we can get along.‘
Just as I raised my hand, Kael grabbed Caela’s and pulled it back.
“You’re Luna now. There’s no need to be polite to an Omega like her. Let’s go I’ll show you around.‘
The two of them left together.
I stood there with my hand still extended, frozen in place like a fool.
