Chapter 6 Cross Boundaries
Charlotte muddled through each day, and soon, half a month passed.
In the morning, she took a pregnancy test and went into the bathroom. Since she had used plenty of these the last time, today, she no longer felt that ashamed and uneasy. She still remembered vividly that day, her hands trembled so much that she could barely read the instructions.
Still, she was very nervous in those few minutes waiting for the result. Upon seeing the single line, she shook her head and stubbornly tested. again while following the steps.
As she saw the same result, she closed her eyes tightly, looking bitter.
“Why?” she thought. “I failed again. I’m still not pregnant.”
She walked downstairs dejectedly. Meanwhile, Marlene immediately rose from the couch and walked toward her. “Well? Charlotte, do you. know the result?”
Marlene seemed genuinely eager.
Charlotte remained silent, and Marlene held her hand, urging her, “Is that a yes?”
“No.”
Charlotte handed Marlene the test.
At the sight of the single line, Marlene staggered backward uncontrollably, as if being hit by a huge blow.
She muttered, “What should we do?”
After Charlotte arrived at the hospital, she told Danielle about the news. Seeing the disappointment on Danielle’s pale face, she couldn’t think of any comforting words. She could only mutter, “I’m sorry, Danielle.”
Danielle pulled herself together and comforted Charlotte gently, “It’s fine. Charlotte. Don’t pressure yourself.”
Just then. Malcolm came to the hospital. As he walked to the ward. Marlene was waiting at the door.
She walked over to him and said. “She’s still not pregnant. Malcolm.”
He frowned in silence.
Marlene couldn’t help but shed tears. She continued, her voice. trembling. “Malcolm, Danielle doesn’t have much time left… You don’t.
wanna lose her, do you?”
“I know. Don’t worry,” he said.
Hearing their voices, Charlotte immediately looked in their direction and spotted Malcolm talking to Marlene with his head lowered.
She shivered slightly and looked away.
The two happened to finish talking, and then Marlene walked into the ward and said to her, “Charlotte, Malcolm wants a word with you.”
Charlotte clenched her fists and nodded. Then she walked out, heading to Malcolm, who was waiting for her at the door.
Looking at her, he reached out suddenly. She was startled, wondering

what he was about to do.
But all he did was close the door behind her so that Danielle and
Marlene couldn’t see them.
“You did the test this morning?”
He asked while looking at her gently.
She said with difficulty. “Yes.”
“How many times?” he asked.
“Twice.”
She added while staring at the floor. “I’ve been taking so many supplements, but…”
He comforted her. “It’s my fault. Don’t beat yourself up.”
She fell silent at his words.
She was so young. Humberto was her first love, and they had never crossed any boundaries, so she failed to grasp Malcolm’s underlying meaning.
Looking up at Malcolm, she tried to understand what he meant.
He explained meaningfully, “I know you didn’t sign up for this, so I didn’t want to force you or scare you.”
Hearing this, she suddenly thought of what Marlene
and instantly caught his drift.
She said, her voice barely audible, “You mean…
