Chapter 4
The tall Caleb noticed something outside; he left without a word and disappeared.
Ten minutes later, I heard the sound of light giggles. When I looked over, I saw Lucille with flowers on her head in the back garden.
Caleb was carefully helping her as they played a silly game of walking across a narrow plank.
“Caleb, hold me tight–ah, help!”
While playing. Lucille lost her balance and stumbled into his chest, her face red.
They both froze momentarily before smiling at each other in silent understanding.
But Caleb’s smile faded when he saw me.
“Hey, Whitney, why are you here?”
Lucille looked at me with wide eyes, blinked, and then gently punched his chest.
“Oh, I get it now. Caleb finally decided to bring you home to meet his parents. Congrats, Whitney.”
Her words were congratulatory, but her tone was full of sadness, which made Caleb look distressed.
“It’s just a meal. Don’t overthink it, silly.”
After comforting Lucille, he glanced at me coldly.
“Is dinner ready?”
Before I could answer, many long snakes suddenly dropped from the trees
above.
I got so scared that I fell to the ground, and Lucille screamed.
Caleb didn’t even glance at me. He quickly grabbed Lucille and ran away.
He only remembered me when the forestry workers arrived to catch the
snakes.
He returned to the tree and searched around, but the security guard at the gate told him I had already left.
Later that night, I was at the airport terminal.
While waiting to board, my phone kept buzzing.
I didn’t pick up until the last moment before the plane took off.
Once I answered, Caleb immediately asked, “Where are you?”
Apparently, he had gotten home to find it empty.
I didn’t respond directly. I just said, “It’s none of your business.”
He paused, then said with some irritation, “You’re pregnant. It’s not good. for the baby if you’re upset.
“Stop being so stubborn. Give me the address, I’ll come get you now…”
Before he could finish, I heard the sound of a kiss on his cheek and Lucille’s laughter in the background.
Caleb cleared his throat.
He quickly shifted the topic and said coldly, “Something came up at the company. Take a taxi back on your own.”
Then, he added with urgency, “Send me a message when you get home.”
Once he hung up, I opened the chat and sent the message as he requested.
“Caleb, let’s break up. I genuinely hope you and Lucille are happy forever.”
When I saw that he had read the message, I blocked all his contacts and switched off my phone.
