“Maddox, what are you doing here?”
I spoke in surprise.
He smiled brightly, showing his white teeth.
“I finally managed to apply and join the healer team.
“We’ll be colleagues from now on,”
The road to the Northern Border was rough, and the car was bouncing a lot. Maddox handed me a mint candy.
“It belps with motion sickness.
I took it and popped it in my mouth, feeling the cool taste spread through my mouth.
He asked about my recent life, and I told him everything.
I felt like there was no reason to hide anything from him, including my past with Sebastian. Those were life experiences, not shameful
secrets.
After three years as a healer, I had learned to be open. If something was on my mind, I would speak up immediately. I didn’t want to hold anything back, because if I didn’t speak now, I might never get the chance again.
After listening, he gently patted my shoulder. “I’ll always be here for you.”
I didn’t understand what he meant.
It wasn’t until we arrived at the destination that the other healers told me he had spent four years applying just to work alongside me.
He had been trying to get closer to me this whole time.
Hearing this, I immediately understood Maddox’s feelings
I was shocked. He had spent four years just to be near me.
Why did he like me?
Sebastian was my fated mate, yet he hated me. So why would Maddox Hike me?
I didn’t ask him directly, I chose to pretend I didn’t know anything
That night, I couldn’t sleep. I stepped out of the tent to look at the stars, only to flihl Maddox sitting outside as well.
When he saw me, he handed me a mint candy.
I said I didn’t eat candy at night.
He smiled. “I’ll remember that.”
I paused, then sat down beside him.
“Harper, do the stars in the sky remind you of us?” he asked.
“We both know where the other is, but we just can’t get close.
I understood what he meant, but I didn’t know how to respond. So, I changed the subject.
“The stars are so beautiful tonight. Let’s take a photo together.”
I took out my phone and snapped a picture with him. The first thing he said was to ask me to send it to him.
After sending him the photo, I returned to the tent. I thought for a moment and then decided to post it.

“Sebastian, even though we left on good terms, I still hate you”
“I hate that you broke your promises, I hate that you lied to me.
“Please, don’t contact me again, okay?”
I hung up and blocked his number.
In the days that followed, I was busy, working with Maddox every day to save different injured people.
The constant threat of gunfire was ever–present, but he always noticed it in time and would pull me into hiding
One day, I had just finished dressing a baby’s wound when Maddox rushed in, carrying a she–wolf.
Her home had been hit by shellfire, and she had lost her life.
