Chapter 2
In the study, Zachary had me tied up.
He told someone to stick a needle into my arm–one thick like a child’s
arm.
Through the partly open door, I heard the doctor tell him, “Mr. Conrad, both Mrs. Conrad and Ms. Newman have Rh–negative blood. But Mrs. Conrad has had heart problems since she was little. Taking her blood like this might cause shock.
“Maybe we should go to the hospital first and give Ms. Newman, who’s anemic, a transfusion-”
“No more talking.”

Zachary cut him off. “Just focus on getting Ruby better. I’ll handle everything else.”
As I heard him coming closer, I shut my eyes.
“Does it hurt?”
It was rare for him to say anything that sounded gentle.
“Just hang in there. It’ll be over soon.”
I turned my head away. I didn’t want to talk to him.
After losing 800cc of blood, my lips turned ghostly white.
Suddenly, Ruby, who was resting in the main bedroom, let out a cough.

Hearing it, Zachary stopped the doctor from removing the needle and told him to take twice as much blood.
The doctor warned him that doing so might kill me.
Zachary hesitated for a moment, then said, “Ruby is carrying a baby. Her safety comes first.”
“But-”
I cut off the doctor and said, “Just take it. Then let me go.”
Even though I looked pale, Zachary was pissed off.
Just as he was about to question whether I truly planned to leave him over something so trivial, Ruby softly called, “Zachary…

Two days later, I ended up in the hospital after going into shock. When I opened my eyes, I saw Zachary looking over some documents.
Our eyes met and held for a moment.
Without saying anything, he handed me a bowl of congee and tried to feed me.
I turned my head slightly. “I can eat on my own.”
He watched as I slowly ate about half the bowl. Then, he asked, “Are you feeling sick?”
I avoided his question and said, “Can you pass me my phone?”

Maybe my tone sounded too distant because he froze for a few seconds. before asking the butler to bring it over.
As he glanced at the missed calls on the screen, he suddenly asked, “Who kept calling you?”
Zachary was never the type to ask so many questions.
I felt a bit annoyed and just said, “It’s someone you don’t know.”
Zachary unfastened the top button of his shirt and looked down at me coldly. “Queenie, how much longer are you going to act like some spoiled princess?
“Give you a little space, and now you think you’re in charge?”
In the past, when Zachary got upset, I’d usually reflect on what I did. wrong and try to comfort him.
But this time, I just pointed at his phone, which was buzzing, and said flatly, “Ruby is calling.”
His eyes lit up right away, and as usual, he avoided me and stepped out into the corridor.
As soon as he left, my phone rang. I picked it up, and before I could say anything, the person on the other end started speaking fast.
“You promised to come find me, remember? Queenie, do you regret it?”
“No, I just ran into a small issue.”
“Issue? What happened? Forget it, I’m flying back to America-”
I cut him off mid–sentence, lowering my gaze and pursing my lips. “Just give me a few more days.”
Right after I hung up, Zachary walked back into the ward.
He noticed my rare smile–one he hadn’t seen in a while–and for some reason, it made his chest feel tight.
But he’d already promised Ruby that he’d go back to sing a lullaby for her and the baby.
Without looking at me, he grabbed the papers and said coldly, “Queenie, I’ve got work to handle at the office. I’ll be back tomorrow.”

Tomorrow came and went–and the next few days too–but he never showed up.
Through mutual friends, I kept receiving clips of him with Ruby. He brought her to events and dinners.
Like someone head–over–heels, he proudly introduced her to everyone
around him.
On the day I left the hospital, Zachary updated his Facebook.
As the sun set, he stood in a hot air balloon, holding Ruby’s flushed face while kissing her romantically.
I left a comment.
[Hope you two have a happy life together and a baby on the way.]
Ten minutes later, he called. I didn’t answer.
About thirty minutes later, after handling my discharge papers by myself, I saw them standing outside the obstetrics and gynecology department.

A nurse at the consultation desk said to Ruby, “Mrs. Conrad, your husband truly cares about you. He never misses an appointment.
“When we do the ultrasound, he always warms up the gel himself because he’s afraid you’ll feel cold.”
The nurses nearby looked genuinely impressed.
Subconsciously, I placed my hand on my stomach, remembering that a baby had once been there.
The day I got into a car accident, lost a lot of blood, and had a miscarriage, I called Zachary in tears through a video call.
But what appeared on the screen was Ruby, completely undressed.
“Mrs. Conrad, Mr. Conrad lost a bet, so I handcuffed him to the bed as punishment. What do you want from him?”
I said nothing and ended the call right away.
Less than a minute later, Zachary called me himself. Holding Ruby in his arms as she stared at me with teary eyes, he yelled at me for being petty and stupid.
He even said, “I wonder what you’re capable of. You couldn’t even protect your baby. You fool.
“Queenie, you’d be better off just getting hit by a truck and dying.”
Snapping out of those memories, I was just about to go another way when Zachary walked over coldly.
“Why are you standing there looking dumb?”
I looked down, automatically trying to explain. “I wasn’t following you
two. I just happened to pass by. Sorry if I disturbed you.”
“Hold on.
Zachary stopped me with a frown, and I noticed a flicker of jealousy in Ruby’s eyes.
